Has anyone been advised to seek referral onto the NHS Weight Management programme?
My knee surgeon asked me to get a referral and wrote to my GP
As ever at my practice it’s gone a bit pear shaped as they set up an appointment with a Health Care Assistant by phone. I sat by the phone this morning and it literally rang for 1 second duration. I rang back - but no avail and it was recorded as a failed encounter which was annoying and really frustrating.
So back to my original point- is this weight program worth it? Is it something I need to do?
I’ve actually started weight watchers with my partner and have lost 5 pounds since New Year and am reasonably happy thus far.

There are tablets that are a help , you have to stick to a diet no fat at all, which a GP can prescribe, i tried them .. they didn't do it for me. They are similar to those that any chemist sells. I was very acute with my spinal issues. Since then i have lost over 7 stone in just over 15 months. with a 2 month break last year. I had asked to be referred, but with a weight loss shake each morning a meal replacement snack bar, 2 pieces of fruit and a normal meal of an evening along with using an exercise bike every day, starting at 9 mins up to eventually 20 mins a day for 5 days a week. My brother has knee problems and he also lost a lot of weight following the same shake bar meal using a rowing machine every day. I hope you too get the weight loss you need for your health .
I d definitely take the tablets if offered. I m trying to go my bit;but that might make the difference.
I did a few years back but declined maybe should hsve went ,Thats good about weight watchers and maybe a better option you coukd lose a good few stone by the sounds of it
your surgery should have what’s called “social prescribers” attached to it. Groups of surgeries in the UK get together and employ one or two. They are the ones with knowledge of what’s on in the community FOR FREE or for payment. Surgeries, incidentally, also, employ pharmacists and these are the people to go to for information on your medication.
Losing weight and keeping it down will definitely help you. You need to find something that works for you. I am not a fan of diets, counting calories etc. Fat makes things tastier. Olive oil is healthy. Cutting down on alcohol and exercising a lot helped me get below 90kg, which was my intial target, and then to 87 kg, while still enjoying my food. Also not eating for at least 12 hours over night helped me lose more weight. Now I try to stop eating by 7pm, and often don't breakfast until after 9 am. I have been about 84kg this year. I weigh myself in the morning before eating, so perhaps after not eating or drinking anything, apart from a little water, my weight is artificially a little lower.
You need to find out what works for you, and remember it's for the rest of your life, otherwise you will put the weight back on.
Thanks for that - really useful. I’ve managed to get up and go for a walk 3- 4 days per week and have cut back booze a lot. I do feel a lot better and energised now so hopefully it will continue.
