has anyone with osteoarthritis had these injections or experience of outcomes of these treatments. I am due to have one just before christmas any patient hints would be appreciated.

i have been having them for my knee once a year for the last three years, normally in November. This year I found I did not need one yet.

High Piglette and BattyI, I'm in UK so the local hospital is doing it on the NHS . PRP is not confirmed as useful in Knee Osteo this work is still in its infancy. I have to let them know how it works for me. Batty1 you are correct this is a ultrasound injection in the knee joint space of plasma from your own blood and you are supposed to stay off the knee afterwards for a few days. I am going by patient transport there and back. But not sure how I will manage at home on return. Going for pre op tests today then injection on 21st in theatre. Freind had it in Ankle worked OK.

It is interesting to know they are now doing PRP on the NHS for knees now. My doctor said they were doing tennis elbow on the NHS three years ago and mentioned they were trying it on other things particularly feet. It is popular with tennis players. They use it in “face lifts”, the “vampire lift”, too. I saw something on TV last week where they were using it on someone’s vagina for some inflammatory disease. It was quite new when I started four years ago, but seems to be becoming popular.

They are trying it on me for inflammatory reasons as I cannot take the inflammatory relief tablets usually used for arthritis. Fingers crossed it works well like for you. Enjoy your day, its bitterly cold here with no let up forecast for rest of week. Then this morning the electric failed not off long thank goodness. Trial run ready for when the power does have cuts as winter is here now.

I hope you can have it. It is cold here too. They were talking to some homeless guy on the news who was living on the streets and he was saying he lined all his clothes with newspaper. I suppose we are lucky not being homeless.

Out of interest are you in the Kent area as they have been quite active in trying out PRP?

No not Kent, West Midlands and South Warwickshire is our Health service Area.

It is just Kent were very keen on PRP for knees a year or so ago.

I had injections in my knees 3 years ago (suprat) I think thats the name sadly it did not work for me because my issue was PSA … they numb your knee pretty good maybe use a US to locate the joint space (depends on doctor) If my memory is right I had to stay off my legs for a day after the shot .

Honestly Im not really sure what exactly that shot was at the time (4 years ago actually) it was a newer injection for knee (suprat) I believe which help with OA pain. But it didn’t work for me because shortly after the shot I was diagnosed with Psoriatic Arthritis so my issue really was not OA although I do have OA its just wasn’t at that time the source of my pains.

People with PSA will usually have OA they kind of go hand in hand (lucky me).

Did you mean Supartz? It uses animal-derived hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is used in anti aging face creams, etc too.

PRP requires you to give your own blood which is then put in a centrifuge with an anti coagulant. The blood is then injected into your knee. It worked well for me.

Yes, Supratz thats what my injections were…. I have heard of the use your own does it work? Its not something that is offered to most of us in the US because its not FDA approved yet apparently insurance won’t cover it.

The problem with PRP is that it is a substance derived from one's own blood, so it is not considered a drug, so does not have FDA approval but can still be given off-label. fda.gov/vaccines-blood-biol...

I understand that but for most people who don’t have extra funds lying around rely on insurance and because its not FDA approved yet health insurance companies won’t pay …

They are quite pricey. I had three over three years one is due now but I don’t seem to need it. The doctor said that they can put off a knee replacement by eight years. They work in over 80% of people apparently.
