Steroid injection and Covid

I’m supposed to go for a steroid injection into my shoulder on Monday but I’ve heard that it lowers your immune system and am now worried about Covid. What are people’s thoughts. Thanks

That’s a really good question. Things to consider:

-check your local health department to see how prevalent covid is in your area

-how much you go out, where you go, and mask and distancing compliance in the places you go

-how much the people in your family go out, where they go, what mask and distance compliance looks like for them

-how long the steroid will dampen your immune response (ask your doc)

-if you don’t get the shot, can you live with the pain and discomfort? If not, can your doc suggest what you can do in the meantime to help if you opt not to get the shot? If you do get the shot, can you self isolate until your immune system rebounds (no idea how long that takes?)

This is tough. It’s a lot to consider with regard to your comfort levels with risk and pain. :/

Thank you for replying. I’m going to speak to my GP on Monday before I have the injection as both my husband and I are mental health nurses and therefore are working every day, not Covid but still in contact with people. Really appreciate your points thanks x

Your pharmacist may have more up to date info about steroid injection and Covid rather than your doc.

I have a steroid injection in my knee and was due another in March but they phoned and told me they won't be doing any more steroid injections until the covid issue is over.

I’ve heard a few people say that, I hope your pain is manageable. I went to see my GP today and he reassured me that there is no evidence that the injection I’m having will cause any problems re Covid and that the virus isn’t going to go away so it won’t ever be over. I decided to have the injection so 🤞🏻 He’s right x

Well I'm jealous but I have found another way - keto. When I am dieting using keto after a week I find my knee pain is a lot more manageable.

Where are you? I am surprised my NHS trust has decided not to give out steroid injections when yours has! Seems a bit harsh, lol

I’m in Lancashire. I only went to my GP’s surgery for mine so maybe that made a difference and it’s the first one I’ve had so again maybe it’s only a small dose. Mine is also following an injury so I’ve no underlying health conditions. Glad you’ve found something that works. Hopefully you’ll be able to get yours soon though xxx

Thank you, and yes, maybe that's the difference, mine was at the hospital.

Mine is for osteoarthritis in my knee and I'm under Addenbrookes. They said they wouldn't be giving them for at least a year, so I'll keep on my keto, maybe won't need it!

By the way I am obese and have asthma so I guess that probably had a bearing on the decision eh? xxx

I think mine is definitely a straight forward one off treatment which may or may not work. I may have a look at the Keto diet if it doesn’t work though, thanks for the info. Not sure being obese will have any bearing on whether they give it but definitely only going to my GP’s surgery will reduce my risk of catching it. Please let me know how you get on xx

73% of covid patients were obese, so they think there's a link. Oh, and at my last blood test I was pre-diabetic (probs to do with all the cakes/banana bread/biscuits I've been making.......comfort food)

Anyway, hope the injection works well for you - I am not too upset really, as my physio pointed out it's only really there to enable you to get the knee working again so you can exercise and build up the muscle to support it.

I’m with you all the way on cakes and biscuits 😂😂 we’ve never baked and eaten as much as we have during lockdown 🤣. You have to have something to keep you happy. Take care and hope you keep well xx

I've had streroid injection to my shoulder never worked plus injection in neck thru painful shoulder it's not a cure just supposed to help they told me. I'm never getting it again but might be better on others x

That sounds horrible. I decided to have the injection today but my GP out the injection in through the back of my shoulder. Xx

Yer mine was corsadon injection first in shoulder. It my help others but never help me really hope your doing ok x
