I'm thinking the hip symptoms I have seem to match bursitis better than anything else. I found an exercise called the Clamshell on the internet and it seems to be helping. I also wonder if I have some referred pain from my arthritic lumbar spine. It comes and goes, some days are better than others. I also read that bursitis can be caused by an infection and should be treated, but I doubt this is my issue. Perhaps it's something to consider as you've had an operation? Aging is no fun.
Hi HeronNS I have experienced gluteal tendinitis which is very similar to bursitis, this has been acutely painful to do any form of exercise. Obviously I have used paracetamol but the exercises that I have used are ones that I found on YouTube - if you search Bob and Brad they show you a huge array of exercises that will help, they are absolutely brilliant PTs! Good luck 🤞🏻
When looking up things like bursitits or gluteal tendinitis I keep seeing mention of tenderness to the touch or pressure, swelling and redness, and I have none of those symptoms. Unfortunately I think it is going to turn out to be originating in my spine. Seems hard to bring up anything with my doctor as they don't like to discuss more than one thing at a time and with a chronic illness that kind of wraps things up doesn't it? However I think there might have been a change where for older patients they can discuss and, most importantly bill medicare for, a second thing in an appointment. So I'm extremely slowly ticking off things on my worry list. I think the painful hip will be be next, but not until June or when I need a prescription renewal, whichever comes first.
Hi Judy, yes I was told the discomfort in my right femur joint was bursitis. Its painful at times especially to touch, the doctor poked it enough to find out....along with a painful left knee from OA, tendonitis right shoulder and other things going on, life is such fun...
I was told inflammation levels are always up in blood test results from rheumatology but not high enough to cause concern so I put it down to that. I have OA and Sjogrens, SLE is stable right now.
Hi there, yes it’s agony isn’t it. I had bursitisof my left hip in March last year and couldn’t bear weight on the leg without pain. The year before it had been replaced.
After several trips to A&E I had an MRI and the result was a large amount of fluid. The A&E doctors said I must have had a fall or a big impact.
Mine went down after 3 weeks but when I saw the orthopaedic surgeon he said that A&E should have considered draining the fluid. As it had gone down he offered me a steroid injection but then my right hip would have been postponed so I put up with it.
When I spoke to surgeon he said it’s a common feature of hip replacements due to the realignment of the joints and tendons.
Ive had bursitis in my left hip for years . Ive had physio which made little difference, the only thing that really helps is a steroid injection, ive had quite a few over the years and im getting another one at rheumatology next week.
I find the pain is much worse going up hills or stairs, the pain is also worse in bed at night , even with a pillow under my leg .
I hope you can get some treatment that helps as its like having a severe toothache in your leg .
Hi,I’ve had the results of my mri which showed inflammation of the tendon attaching the top of the hamstring, steroid injection now on the ‘to do’list but what worried me was the consultant said they’ll have to be careful not to damage the sciatic nerve so I’m a bit wary. The injection will be ultrasound guided has anyone heard of that before please ?
The consultant did an ultrasound first as well as an examination to get the right spot , I have also had it done by a consultant in the past who didn’t use ultrasound . If you are concerned you could speak to the consultant’s secretary to find out what the plan is . I hope it goes well for you xx
Oh yes following hip replacement 9 years ago and still there. Various treatments but I have to live with it. Then 2 years ago I had other hip replaced no bursitis but tendonitis every since. Pain worse than pre op. Can't win 🙄
I have ongoing bursitis in both my shoulders and recently my left hip. It is very painful and keeps reoccuring. I think the probem keeps occuring because of arthritis and tendonitis and the fact that I am diabetic.
Hi,I also have a 3.09cm bursa located on the top groin side area of my femur. It isn't tender or painful to the touch but it shoots pain down into my upper thigh - hamstrings/quads/left adductor area. Pain changes location and intensity every day. Bad at night too. Also had a meniscus tear repaired in left knee which didn't really stop the pain there - and now the pain from the bursa shoots down into that knee as well. I have read that you can get the Bursa removed by keyhole surgery - but I am waiting for an appointment with a Hip consultant to confirm that. I've had mine for 7 months now with no sign of it going away by itself. The only other solution I know of is Steroid injection - but this only seems to work for a few - and at that is only a temporary relief - not a long term solution
