Physio to get knee moving

Hi,

So as a newly diagnosed OA sufferer I have lots of questions - look out for me daily :D

Today's question is about physio. Already been having some but this was before diagnosis. Several people have recommended cycling but I can't bend my knee enough (not been able to for a couple of years), now I can't even use a reclining bike.

I am wondering if anyone has had any success with physio in getting the knees to bend properly (or at least better)?

Don't want to waste my money!

Thanks :)

Good morning Sueper.

Short answer: Yes, great success with many people over the last thirty years. There are various factors which influence the degree of success but improvement can always be made.

the best thing is hydrotherapy ie doing exercises in a warm pool - it has the most amazing affect and benefit.

The only other thing that has helped me enormously was when I went to a yoga retreat in india and had therapy for 3 weeks with aruverdic therapy - I also cannot do the cycling etc and it was the first time I was without pain.

there are many things to download but I think the secret is to keep moving - I have also seen Tai cheng on amazon usa which has a programme specially for arthritis - I spent a lot of money hoping for a miracle but ultimately it is down to you to keep exercising and you will get a range of movement if you persevere - good luck

Thanks Deborah. I used to enjoy yoga so I am going to take it back up again once my house is back to normal :)

My consultant told me that strengthening the quads is the answer to knee pain. Not by thrusts or by squats but by straight leg lifts to the other knee ( which is bent ) lie down and lift the unbent leg to the other knee and hold for 3 seconds. Then lower for 3 seconds. Repeat this 8 times building up to 10 times 3 times a day. Repeat with other leg. He reckons strong quads are the answer!!!

I have severe OA and need a hip operation but need to lose weight. down 2 stone but still cannot get and operation until another stone off and then it is just seeing a consultant and taking it from there. Working full time so very frustrating. I am trying out Iyengar yoga one to one and concentrating on the hips. My first meeting with the teacher went well. I will let you all know how it goes. good luck!

Thanks. Would love an update on the yoga. For now my pain has eased but the lack of bend in my knee is so frustrating!
