Swimming. It's impact-free, and the water simultaneously offers resistance for your muscles and support for your joints. Front crawl if poss.
I find swimming difficult with my arthritic knees even in the water they hurt. My sport of choice is cycling. It is seated, there is no impact to the knees and it's a damn good work out. It also seems to be strenthening my leg muscles which is helping too.
Hi Kevin, I have osteoarthritis in both hips. I'm waiting for a double hip replacement. The pain is constant day and night. Some days I find it so hard just to walk. Having done rugby and martial arts all my life (I am 56) I have to do some form of training. I set up a gym at home which consists of a cross trainer, a rowing machine and a bench with plenty of free weights. The cross trainer is such a gentle motion and works well for me with a limited motion for my hips both forward and backwards. The rowing machine is an excellent cardio workout and you can set your own limits as to how much you bend your knees still getting a good workout using mainly the upper body. The weights I use are purely for toning. I do 4 sets of 25 reps with pretty much every exercise. All of this works for me with my limitations. My leg muscles suffer but again I do what I can. Can't wait for my operation. Hope this has given you a few ideas. All the best. Jim
Exercise bike will strenghthen your knees.
Hi buddy, I was a good bodybuilder up until a couple of years ago , 16 stone at ten percent body fat until my right arm gave in to arthritis , now I'm on heavy meds like morphine etc, I found the best way to get the most benefit from cardio without spending an hour on the treadmill was a weighted vest of the Internet , I purchased a maxi vest and a 25 minute walk with that on was better than the knee pounding of running and jogging, you can start of with as little as 5 or 10 kilo in the vest and work your way up to 30 kilo in the vest I have, a walk round a couple of blocks will tidy you up in no time!!
Osteoarthritis can get aggressive. For me mine started in my hands two years ago. Now it's in my shoulders, knees lower back , feet and hips. Do what you can because it will get agressive at some point. It's just a matter of when it does.
