Yay ! I wish I could drive and you should be proud of yourself . I'm 27 & still have no desire to drive , well I guess I'm just terrified of it. But one step at a time and I hope you push yourself to drive more 😊

in reply to JadeRaye

I am 40 and don’t drive. If you live in a city with mass transit you don’t need a car.

in reply to JadeRaye

I knew how to drive at 16 just my Anxiety and agoraphobia usually kicks in when im in a car, remember small steps lead to big ones

in reply to

I do not think I can drive. I know my limits. The limited education and skill set I have would prevent from getting a job where I could afford insurance, gas, and a car loan payment. All my earnings would go to support a car.

Congratulations! I am so happy for you. Keep up the great job. You are making so much progress.

Remember these when you are driving.

Danielle, I'm gonna take a bit of a flier here, so forgive me if I'm way off, but I'm pretty certain two things are true:

A.) Your mom is probably pretty awesome and supportive

B.) The above videos probably show excellent examples of techniques your mom has never tried to use on you while being awesome and supportive. :)

Congratulations on another victory, and thank you for taking the time to share not just your trials, but you successes and happiness with us too. You did good. 👍 Keep being patient with youself, even when some people decide to be so ignorant and selfish THEY act like spoiled brat a-holes and treat you like garbage.

When they do, don't take it personally. Those bone-heads treat nearly everyone like poo, and we don't like them either. That's why we all hang out here with nice people . . . like you. 😉

in reply to old-soul

Hahaha lol mom definitely have not use those techniques. And thank you, i want to share not only the bad moments but the great ones too.... and you're right, you me and everyone else on here we're pretty awesome people

Know how hard it can be. That’s another step you’ve achieved. Well done, take one day at a time. ❤️

in reply to Tillycat1

Definitely one day at a time, i hope you're doing well hun

You need to stick at it, if not you will effect your confidence.

I am disabled and I took delivery of a new car four weeks ago. it does everything it reads street signs and reverses by itself. The problem I have is allowing the car to park itself. I am petrified it will hit cars on each side of the parking bay. So I have not tried it yet. So I am doing my parking myself. Anxiety is a real problem. It also displays if someone is passing to close and that can give me a shock when the alarm goes off.

The new systems are part of my adaptable needs, I am letting fear rule. I need to gain confidence.

in reply to

Will definitely stick to it, you should too, i learned in therapy there's no quick way to do things when we suffer from anxiety but the little steps counts and make the way for victory

in reply to

Will do Callmedanielle

We took delivery of the car two weeks before going on holiday in Ireland. It has been a real learning experience. As you say no quick fixes we learn and achieve whatever the situation we find ourselves in. Many find driving is a form of release and enjoyement

Go for it

I am actually exactly the opposite, truth be told. I've worked on and test driven cars and motorcycles that no human being in their right mind should feel comfortable piloting, and would love to pilot a motorcycle on the Bonivelle salt flats in Utah past the speed of sound at least one in my life-time.

I throw up at the sight of blood though. {sigh} What a tuff guy, hu? lol

I also like really huge 4th of July fireworks displays, long walks on moonlit beaches, Louis Armstrong, Etta James, The Rolling Stones, Third Eye Blind, Pantera and horses.

Mosquitoes, not so much.

I am bothered by the fact that very few vegetarians realize the 85% of all soybeans grown on earth are from generically modified seed that farmers now pay 15 times more for seed than they USED to, and now have to buy every seed they plant each and every planting, because the GMO stuff is patented and it is now illegal for them to produce their own seed from last year's crop, EVER.

Soy is given as just one example. The same can be said of tomatoes, corn, romaine lettuce, and ever cotton. Just about every plant that can be grown from seed is now nearly 100% monopolized by chemical companies that charge 15x more for seed than was charges just 10 or so years ago. Not double, triple or 5 times more. The money a farmer spent on 15 seeds in 2008 will now only buy then 1 single seed.

How does this all the in to the topic at hand? Well, some of my fears are more reasonable than others, and sometimes what might seem like a lack of what many would consider very REASONABLE fears actually allows one to have at least SOME kind of unique freedoms.

The most destructive form of fear is "False Evidence Appearing Real," particularly where it causes members of the world to fear one another based of things that aren't even true in the 1st place.

Where overcoming a fear that is a tough one is concerned, and where the fear may be disproportionate to the actual risk, (IE: phobias), manifesting is a powerful tool that really helps. It's simple to do. Here's an example.

Danielle, imagine youself driving along a really pretty country road in a perfect day. Sky is blue with just the perfect number of little puffy bright white clouds - fields dappled with pretty yellow, purple, orange and red wildflowers . . .

Imagine your just driving to take in the sights, and you decide to stop at a little country deli to get a sub and a soda to take with you to the lake, and you have your lunch at a picnic table near the water, and listen to children laughing and playing on the swings and slide nearby.

Imagine after you eat, your a little tired and decider to grab the blanket from the back seat and read under a shade tree for a bit before dozing off for a little 40 minute siesta before heading back home, watching the sun set in you rear view mirror.

You arrive home, park your car, and head in to start dinner while talking with a friend on the phone for a bit.

Imagine that sort of driving scenario for 20 minutes 3 days per week, like, Monday Wednesday and Friday. Add stuff like, as part of your drive, getting onto and off of a freeway with moderate traffic as part of your trip, and doing it JUST and easilly as the drivers you feel most comfortable riding along with.

That, my dear friend, is POWERFUL MEDICINE. ;)

in reply to old-soul

So basically i should try and get my mind to picture a perfect scenario i don't know if i could, i will try but i get to anxious for my brain to come up with anything remotely close to positivity

Yup. I can honestly say it has helped me to do this with all sorts of things I have had a lot of difficulty with. Driving isn't one of them, but social situations definately is.

I learned to drive at a very young age, and I had really longed to be able to drive before I ever did. I would lay awake at night and imagine being Richard Petty driving in NASCAR races. lol When my mom let me drive, I just got in and drove, no problem, and that first car I drove was a standard transmission too.

Social situations were a very different situation, and sometimes still are, but I do a lot better when I imagine them ahead of time, and imagine people being friendly and helpful the whole time. If I can imagine an event going well from beginning to end, including actually leaving the event wishing it wasn't over yet, it is ALL WAYS far more likely to go as I'd imagined it.

The same goes for negative thinking too, so consciously imagining things going well, be it driving a car or performing a delicate life-saving neuro-surgery, or making a great new recipie, actually does work to improve the level of success people achieve. There have been tons of studies that have proven this to be factual, but I never needed studies to see that this was just plain old common sense.

For what it's worth i have always found big vacant parking lots as well as cemetary roads great places to work with new drivers. The twisty roads in several of the old cemeteries near me are really perfect. It's all real low speed driving, some of them have lots of hills, some pretty steep, which is perfect for working on more tricky stops and starts, and if a new driver runs anyone over and squashes them, well, burial services are conveniently located right on site! lol

Parks and other recreation areas can be good places to practice driving too, but only at times when there aren't tons of people there. Practicing there when their are lots of kids running around and playing together isn't a good idea, but there are lots of big parks around here that are opened all day during the week, and they are generally just about completely empty during the day on any given week day when school is still in session.

So anyhow, there are a few things I have found helpful in teaching new drivers of both cars and motorcycles. The power of positive thinking is indespensible though. Keep us posted, won't you? You've got lots of us pulling for you, and I think I speak for all of us when I say that we all see you growing to be a strong, confident and independent woman who is admired by many, and respected by all. 👍💪🙌

If there are drivers that you ride with who drive sanely, just take time to watch them while you are riding with them, but don't tell them or they will want to tell you all kinds of stuff, and maybe that's not what you need. :) If the driver DOES know that's what you're doing, then sit directly behind them and neither of you talk. Just watch.

Later you can sort of re-play parts of their driving habits but just imagining yourself using the brake, the gas, the shift lever and the turn signals.

Maybe you might imagine going down a road with two lanes going the same direction

You are driving in the right lane and there are no other cars anywhere around you.

You decide to get in the right lane, "just becasue you can," and "Because it's good practice for changing lanes."

You know there are no cars there, because you just looked in the mirror, AND because you actually checked in that spot along side your car between just behind the driver's door to your rear bumper, and also saw there was no car there.

Yup. All clear FOR SURE. (You knew there was nothing there anyway because you have driven the last 2 miles with no cars around you, but you are doing this to practice how to change lanes safely, and when practicing that at first, it's good to practice when there are no other cars nearby, even if doing it in your imagination only)

So . . . you push the turn signal lever down to indicate you are going to move to the left lane, check your mirror and look over your left shoulder a second time, then look forward again and ease over to the left lane.

Once you are fully into the center of the left lane, you nudge the turn signal lever up so it pops into the middle position again and turns the flasher off.

Imagine driving along in your lane with no other cars around you for another 30 seconds to a minute . . . THEN . . .

. . . get up from the kitchen table and make popcorn because you just sat and imagined yourself changing lanes on an empty 2 lane (in one direction) "Divided highway", or on a 4 lane "in town" kind of road, and that's enough for one sitting.

Next time you are riding in a car or even on a bus, just sit and watch the driver. Honestly though, don't tell them you are watching them to learn how to drive unless you do the thing about siting behind them and NOT talk about driving. (Or anything else. The idea is for you to just be able to watch them without talking about driving OR anything else.)

In almost every case, people just start telling new drivers a LONG LIST of, "Things to remember while driving." That's not generally very helpful to a new driver. :)

People do that to new drivers becasue they don't think about the fact that *they don't drive around running through a never-ending list of things to remember* - that would be like "trying to remember everything you have to know about walking" every time you "try to walk." That's very *** not natural!!! ***

Once you learn to visualize good things, good things are far more likely to happen. From there, you can slowly start to build more of your own scenarios like:

"making the last turn of a trip onto a street a friend lives on. You then imagine turning on the right turn signal as you approach their driveway, slow down and pull into the driveway, coming to a smooth stop. You put the car in "Park" - Turn the key off and remove it from the ignition - take off your seat belt - and get out. Go knock on the door and call out, "Hi, Betty! It's Danielle! I'm here!"

That's all there is to it.
