Sticky Blood

I had the same a few years ago femoral vein DVT and multiple PE's. I was on heperin and then rivaroxaban for 6 months. Came off and then 6 months later, had multiple tiny blood clots that stuck together in my heart, causing a blockage.

I would agree, you need to find the reason for it. I have always had sticky blood. Unfortunately the first hospital did not investigate the reason for the blood clots properly. It turned out it was APS, which a new rheumatologist suggested when talking to me, which causes multiple blood clots. It can be diagnosed by 2 blood test. I am now on warfarin for life. It is likely my femoral vein DVT and PE's were actually tiny blood clots that had stuck together caused by APS.

No blood clots or problems since.

I am on Warfarin for life been on it 6yrs what a nightmare when you need an operation. You have to inject heparin injections and then the problems getting you weaned back to warfarin. I can’t go on anything else as have metal heart valve. Can you not get put on anything else either?

Hi Pammy, I’ve had this kind of hassle myself and not without problems. I have been on warfarin since 1998 and have a metal aortic heart valve too and have my own INR test kit which is great. I was told to inject Clexane when my INR went down to 2.5 before an ankle op (I am currently on 3 - 4 range as I had a tia a while back) but I have essential tremor and didn’t inject myself too well and ended up with a stomach hematoma. I didn’t have my surgery and do not intend to go through that again. Before that if I had to have surgery I had heparin intravenously which worked brilliantly. This new way of injecting yourself should not be happening in my opinion although I do understand that there are many that are fine with it. Hope you get the right treatment for you.

Yes I have my own machine also. A blessing when going abroad. Yes hematoma quite common with injections unfortunately. Mum on Apixaban and she has no issues but I can only stay on warfarin .

Yes totally agree with you on when on visits abroad the machine is a blessing. An Uncle is on Apixaban also and is fine on it. Warfarin is what I’m on for life also and really with all the hassle otherwise it really works very well for me and I’ve been on it for years! Too many years to think about. Heparin I believe also has its problems when having surgery but it worked for me as it is monitored in hospital before surgery.
