Taking NAC while on an anticoagulant

Has anyone ever discussed taking NAC to help with mucous production or any other problems for which it is said to be helpful? Or is anyone actually taking it ? How has the experience been?

I use a GP prescribed Dymista nasal spray twice a day. I have a deviated nasal septum from breaking my nose years ago and If I dont take this, by the evening I cant breath. You could google it to see what it contains as the ingredients mean nothing to me!

I am also taking flecanide bisoprolol simvastatin apuixaban lanzaprole and magnesium and calcium and alendronic acid. I dont have any noticable problems with this mix of medication. Hope that is helpful.

I think one of the ingredients may be hydrocortisone but Im not sure. X

It is my understanding that NAC has both anticoagulant and anti-platelet properties so should not be taken with any other anti coagulants. Also, it is somewhat harsh on the stomach and can cause irritation to the stomach lining increasing the risk of serious bleeds in people on anti-coagulants. I guess you would need to discuss these risks against any potential benefits from taking NAC with your doctor, as everyone’s circumstances and health issues are different. 🙂

Pretty much my assessment too. Will speak to the experts - thanks

Correct. Given intravenously it increases the PT- prothrombin time. This is the blood test from which an INR is calculated. Whether it has the same effect when used as a nasal spray I don't know. Also wanted to say that this drug interferes directly with blood clotting through their own actions whilst others interact with the warfarin to either reduce or increase it's efficacy.

Also, annpatricia asked about it using it whilst anticoagulated, but didn't say whether they were on warfarin or one of the newer anticoagulants. deodeottie is on one of the newer anticoagulants, ie apixaban. As most people will be aware warfarin and the newer anticoag's are very different types of drugs and , as far as we know, a lot more drugs interact with warfarin so it's important to make that distinction.
