Laughing Gas Destroys Myelin

I saw on the news about the French lady who was killed when a whipped cream cannister exploded and hit her heart.

You never know what's around every corner.

But it reminded me of Laughing Gas. That's the propellant used in the cannister.

It's used to get high, and not just by teenagers.

I went on Amazon looking at refillable whipped cream cannisters and cylinders of N20 to power them.

Stay with me.

Then I googled the safety of huffing N20.

And this is what interested me...

CHEM LAB: THE DOWNSIDE OF GETTING HIGH ON NITROUS OXIDE

wired.com/2007/12/chem-lab-...

And here is the relevant bit......

Part of his spinal column had degenerated. That was no surprise since laughing gas interferes with the production of myelin, a fatty coating that surrounds nerves and helps them send signals.

And...

that the gas inactivates vitamin B12 and the junkie was already running low on that nutrient. Daily doses of the gas for ten years worsened his dietary deficiency, leading to the severe neurological damage.

And....

the patient recovered partially after receiving doses of vitamin B12 and the amino acid methionine. Both of those chemicals helped to rebuild the damaged myelin coating around her nerve fibers. Seven months later, and after an aggressive rehabilitation program, the unfortunate girl could walk again.

I had never heard of methionine.

It is cheap,I am getting some. Could hardly make my condition any worse.

So there you have it, kids. Stay away from the laughing gas.

That's amazing. How come no one has picked up on this? I would advise you to check things out with the Dr first, just to be on the safe side. Please let us know how you get on though. Good luck x

I googled this and on livestrong.com, there is a warning:

While you’re taking methionine supplements, you might also need to take extra B-complex vitamins, particularly vitamin B6, vitamin B12 and folate. This is because taking methionine while you have a B-vitamin deficiency could increase your blood levels of homocysteine and cholesterol, both of which are linked to elevated risks for atherosclerosis. Even without B-vitamin deficiencies, taking high doses of methionine – 7 grams daily or more – can increase your homocysteine levels. Taking up to 2 grams per day of methionine doesn’t appear to cause any serious adverse effects, however. Creatine supplements pose their own risks as well, particularly the risk of kidney damage, when taking high doses, and heart arrhythmias.

Very interesting, Monkeybus. This type of amino acid might help treat ASL, Parkinson's disease, fibromyalgia, and more. I prefer natural products to treat our disease but I doubt no one will fund such studies.

I'm going to get some. Might as well try it, right?

Actually I'm already taking 536mg in each protein shake I have. I thought the name looked familiar so I had to get up and look at some of my supplements. Surprise! There it was on the label...at a low dose.

I'll order some this weekend, already have plenty of B vitamins from my antioxidant experiments.

Must be some studies done on dose and effects. I'll post up here.

I still maintain there must be plenty more information already out there in the public domain.

Showed my neurologist the laughing gas article.

He said "Oh yes, I have a patient who abuses NO2, he now has spastic paraparesis".

I also asked him about methionine.

He said no problem. Though he also said it would do me no good.

I'll be the judge of that. He is the man who said Modafinil and 4-AP would do me no good.

Then he said "do you want some Lyrica?".

I said yes.

Not what you're looking for?
