My dear Mum who was diagnosed with vascular dementia in 2015 after many years of me telling doctors that she had memory problems. All they did was put memory problems on her notes. Finally she had an MRI and a diagnosis. Mum has taken supplements all her life starting with her Mum giving her rosehip syrup and herbs for ailments. She was always ordering from an overseas company for various things. She also taught me a lot about alternative treatments, buying me books on the subject. My brother has other ideas and won't even take vitamin C for a cold. I have paid privately out of my money for appointments with a naturopath and an endocrinologist who each gave me a list of supplements that will help Mum. She was doing well, walking over a mile everyday and keeping on an even keel, keeping happy and content. She also has had low thyroid for years and takes levothyroxine. She went to an elderly clinic and they found out low heart rate and some abnormal heart rhythms. She had a pacemaker fitted in the summer of 2017. I had no choice in the matter as the doctors signed the paperwork. She was walking well uphills and had no visible problems and was strong in the legs but had a small problem with balance sometimes. I was giving her the recommended supplements for dementia. I had to stop the supplements prior to the procedure and afterwards. After the pacemaker she developed a DVT and was put onto Rivaroxaban (Xarelto). This was decreased after 3 months. Mum has deteriorated significantly in this time and has got so weak she now has to use a raiser chair. I was told to not give her any supplements with the Rivaroxaban. Mum had a small procedure on her skin middle of Jan 2018 and I was told to stop the Rivaroxaban which I did. It was also 6 months since Mum was started on the drug so it was left off and I resumed giving Mum the fish oil omega 3 and some of her supplements again as she is becoming awkward and agitated and unhappy. I cannot remember where I got 6 months from but I am sure it was at the pacemaker clinic or some doctor, I have taken her to so many appointments. Its difficult because the carers aren't allowed to give her supplements and I cannot visit every day. My brother who had POA but he was giving me so many problems with his totally controlling and blaming attitude that I had his POA revoked over a year ago. Unfortunately it was considered better to rerevoke his POA and this has just been done but he has suddenly become controlling again and talking to her doctor and carers and saying Mum should be on Rivaroxaban and statins and I have taken her off without permission. Mum took statins many years ago but they gave Mum lots of pain, her cholesterol isn't high. I have told everyone, doctor included, what I am giving Mum, I have never hidden the fact she is on supplements and its on her notes. I buy the supplements out of my own money along with her food. I am doing this because this is what she would have wanted, she was always against drugs and at the moment she only takes levothyroxine. I want the best for Mum. I am wondering if there is a holistic expert in dementia or naturopath or if people say that Rivaroxaban or statins are good. I am open to any comments and discussion as to what works and what doesn't. I have spent hours researching the latest supplements which are proven to work, I hate to see Mum deteriorate, Mum has improved on supplements before and I won't give up on her. Sorry for the long post, any replies are appreciated, thanks, Lou
