I’m soon due to have a respiratory examination as I have water on the outside of my right lung. This was diagnosed by X-ray.

I have been told by the Respiratory Doctor to stop taking Edoxaban 2 days before the examination in case a needle has to be inserted into my chest. Any useful comments would be helpful

Ask the respiratory doctor what is the likelihood of the needle having to be inserted into your chest.

If it's not overly high, why not agree to have that part of the examination done at a separate visit if needed. That way you would only have to stop anticoagulation if had to be performed. Of course, involve your cardiologist in the decision as they know your medical history.

Thanks for your reply. My hospital letter clearly says to stop for 2 days prior

I can’t ask the Cardiologist as I don’t know who he or she is and I haven’t heard from them since my failed ablation about 3 or 4 ago. I am in persistent AF

Then I suggest you do exactly as the hospital says. It will be a matter of risk assessment, the risk of stroke v Bleed into your chest. It’s not unusual to have to stop anticoagulants for several days prior to some procedures. I am stopping for 6 days - 3 days prior and 2-3 days following a procedure although I’m not in persistent AF. I checked with my cardiologist and they had no concerns.

Edoxaban will remain in your system for 24-48 hours after you stop and you will be able to restart as soon as you have had your exam - hope it goes well and no needles will be involved. Best wishes.

I had major abdominal surgery last August and stopped my Edoxaban for 3 days, no issues and it was restarted the next day.

This is not unusual and causes few problems. I have had to stop taking before some dental procedures, before a colonoscopy and 5 days before my knee replacement and back on a lower dose for a month afterwards. In the very rare event that anything should happen you are in a good place in the hospital to be sorted out immediately. It will be fine.
