Age 80 and no Afig for over a year. Dr. said to stop Eliquis. I forgot to ask how. Can I stop "cold turkey" or must I wean off?

I'm the same age as you and am on Warfarin, have been for 15 years ( with the exception of a brief and totally disasterous interval of 6 months on Edoxaban). Given that my AF kicks in every 4 or 5 years and is otherwise highly controlled there is no way I'd stop an anticoagulant, especially one of these newer ones. My point is just because historically my AF kicks in every 4 or 5 years doesn't mean that it will continue to act in this way. Tomorrow may come with a "Whammy" of an AF hit and then I'm cactus.

Anyway, I wish you well in stopping your Eliquis, hope it is a successful move. In any event there should be a bit of paper in the pack which will discuss a load of do's and don'ts - it should say something about coming off Eliquis I would have thought.

AIUI you can just stop taking it but it would be best to check with your pharmacist.

I’ve read at age after 80 and weight 60 can Eliquis be lowered to 2.5 mg I think it’s not only for blood clots protection while having Afib , but for general protection from blood clots .The question is why to stop? Was it severe bleeding or any serious side effect?

Hi

As I stop my equivalent PRADAXA but at the lower rate 110 for operations. I would think you stop it will leave your body as it deminishes.

As I understand it you can just stop and its effects cease and blood returns to its original state. Mine was stopped completely after 7 years on it in Dec 23 in hospital due to suffering a frank hematura -was in hospital for a month and had two blood transfusions amongst other things. I am on the waiting list for a CRT - D implant for heart failure and AF. After much discussion between cardiologist and urologist about bleed v stroke risk I have just been put on the lower dose of 2.5 mgs twice a day. Aged 77- just keep fingers crossed!
