Apixaban and bruising

Hi

I knocked my leg on the corner of the bed 2 weeks ago and it was healing ( just)

However , this morning i did exactly the same thing again in exactly the same place

It hurt when i knocked it, but to look at the bruise you would think i was in a car crash

It is very black just like the last one

Does anyone know if there is any cream or lotion i can put on it, because my skin on my legs is very dry and now badly bruised on one of them

The bruise is on my shin

I am 72 years old and i was prescribed Apixaban in September last year

I have not been bleeding excessively when i cut myself or bruising any more than normal recently

This bruising was caused by me walking into the bed and it did really hurt when i banged it

Any possible advice would be helpful as i always tend to need advice when the GP surgery is closed ( never happens Mon to Friday )

Thank you and Regards

Stay well everyone 💞

Hi Hissence. Sorry to hear of your dilemma. Bruising while on an anticoagulant can look horrendous, but thank goodness you didn’t fall and knock your head. It’s just unfortunate that you knocked yourself again in the same place. Shin is a very painful place as it’s mostly bone.

Arnica cream is good for bruising if you have a chemist open tomorrow. You can also ask the pharmacist, whilst you are there, to have a look. My pharmacist is sometimes better than my GP.

I think it should be ok, but be careful it doesn’t happen again. If you have any swelling or pain then it’s 111 for advice. Best wishes.

Thank you for your reply, yes i really need to be more careful.

I will look and see if there is pharmacy open tomorrow to show them it's unlikely i will get past the receptionist at the G.P Surgery ( it's getting ridiculous)

I did see a mention of Arnica cream but wasn't sure if it was suitable as i take Apixaban

Once again thank you for your helpful reply

Kind regards, stay well 💞

I am on apixaban and have used arnica cream for bruising for many years. It is homeopathic, it works and I wouldn’t be without it.

Thank you and regards

Anything topical is ok and doesn’t go into the bloodstream enough to interact with your meds. Hope you get some today but tomorrow will soon be here! I have more or less given up with my GP! Much better care from my pharmacist, 111, or AE if necessary. 🤫. Take care.

I've just bought Hirudroid for my bruising (Australia) I bruise easily even before taking apixaban, I'm so hoping it will work.Pharmacist recommended it.

I know it's too late now, but I find that if I bump anything then getting an ice pack on it straight away helps reduce bruising. I use ice cubes from the freezer wrapped in a cloth.

I have had the same problem kicking on the bed corners I have “beautify “ the bed by putting the small decorating pillows at the bed corners ,that i kicked, under mattress in the way that part of the pillows is hanging over the frame structure.it’s not nice, but helpful !

Yes, Arnica and body cream is useful, but it take time to hill! And bruises will be diminished .

Be careful .The aging 🤔body is easily bruised even without the kicking .

hissencefloods , hi. I use arnica cream on my bruises. Some chemist stock and health stores like Holland an Barrett sell, but it’s not cheap. About £5-6. Good luck hope you’re better soon.

It’s only a problem if you hit your head . That’s why I had to go in the scanner to check for a bleed on the brain. My cat likes to grab my ankles and calves when he’s doing zoomies…I get bruises on legs as well as claw holes, none of these is a problem,. Antiseptic cream and a boot up the cat’s fat rear end..🙀. Apixaban is great!

Because of my choices of working and sporting careers bruises have been my constant companions. My approach to them is the same as any of my colleagues and teammates - nothing!

They are harmless and go away. No treatment necessary.
