I had my first one in may 2023 not gone into af since. I’ve had some skipped beats and some scares brought upon by anxiety and panic thinking it’s come back. My hr was about 225 when it happened and woke me out my sleep, I’m approaching 2 years soon and was wondering how long the cardioversion will hold out for

Jump to repliesThere's no telling how long your cardioversion will last. They can last days, weeks, years and sometimes for ever. Let's hope it's forever. It depends what may have triggered it, like something you ate or drank. Even an infection, operation, COVID, alcohol or eating food containing artificial additives. Try not to wear tight waistbands and never over eat. Please let us know how long you stay in normal rhythm as it gives us hope of being the same.

hi Jean, thanks for the reply at the time we had just had a new born and I was getting no sleep at all and then I was working and also going through a qualification at college so I had a lot on and I was very very stressed and I was drinking a few energy drinks and high caffeine drinks. Since I’ve not touched a energy drink
Hi Jaket.
I have had a number of CV's. One lasted a few days and one a few years. It's the luck of the draw. I can't tell you how long it will last.
I do know this though - if your HR hits 225 bpm again, seek medical help right away - it's far too high.
Good luck with your CV. Long may it last.
Paul
Edit - Keep off the energy drinks. They are a BIG no - no!
Hiya Paul, it instantly woke me up out my sleep at 6 am and o didn’t have a clue I was in a lot pain and it felt like my heart and pulse were doing two different things. At the time I was living 5 min away from a and e so I instantly drove to and left the car outside the door and ran in with so much panic as I never experienced it before so o assumed I was having a heart attack and then they instantly discovered it was af and atrial flutter and was given a blood thinning jab and cardioverted within about a hour or so off arriving after medication wasn’t working but now I just worry I’m going to have to relive it all again
Hi Jacket.
Try not to worry to much and be reassured that the medics soon put it right. If it did happen again call 999 and they will blue light you. The chances are it won't happen again as it's likely they gave you a PIP to take just incase. If not ask your GP about such an option. I can think of a couple right now and could tell you a way of getting it into your system within a few minutes (it would claim you down and likey lower your HR within 5 minutes). However, I'm not medically qualified so such information really needs to be given by a doctor - not from someone posting on a forum.
Good luck.

Hi Paul I have bisoprol that’s all and he said to use that as soon as it happens and get to ane so they can correct it soon as
Hi Jaket.
Bis would be on my 'hit list'. I assume it would be a dose of between 5mg - 10mg. I should think up to10mg if your HR hit's 225 bpm.
Ask your doctor if there's a quick way to get it into your blood stream within a few minutes. As above, I could tell you how but I won't - your doctor may disagree anyway. In fact it's unlikely he/she would suggest it as medics tend to follow strict guidelines.
There's something else you could take too that would claim you down. Talk to your GP as a combo of the two are likely to drop your HR. I feel that even if it did drop you would need to still call 999 and be taken to hospital to be checked out. Don't worry about it happening again. As stated in my last post, you know the medics can soon put things back on track. Have the right mindset about such fears and show 'em the door as soon as these thoughts arise.
Enjoy your Sunday.

Hello, I had a cardioversion in April of 2020 and it was still holding firm in august of 2021 when I had open heart valve repair. Still get some occasional skipped beats, but otherwise heart is doing fine Wishing you well.
hi Jaket
The nasal controlled breathing can help, read about how incorrect breathing can affect our general health. An easy read is Breath by James Nestor. My cardiologist put me on very low dose of a beta blocker called metoprolol not so much to lower HR but just to lessen the adrenaline spike that can sometimes set off AF
yeah for a long time I was getting stressed and I could feel it in the patterns I was breathing, is get like a nervous cough for a hour and it would make me feel lightheaded during these spells of high intensive stress
I had a Cardioversion in 2018, my AF is symptomless, but during my 6 month check up post diagnosis (by lucky chance,) the Cardiologist said I was in AF, would I like a Cardioversion - he would admit me and do it that PM. I said since I'm here I might as well. Fortunately I had used my son as a driver because of the parking problems where the Cardio practices. One zap that afternoon and I was in rythmn. I have had the occasional short bouts of AF since, never has it registered at my annual visit to the Cardio when he uses all his fancy equipment, so I can say it has worked well.
With cardioversion my first lasted 3 months, the second 6 hours. Then I had 2 ablations. You've done well!
You can calm your heart and panic attacks with slow deep breathing. I learned to breathe in for a count of 7 and out for a count of 11. It doesn't matter precisely as long as the out breath is longer than the in breath. And you should breathe from your belly keeping your shoulders down and expanding your lower rib cage. Do it for 5 minutes at least while visualising something like waves breaking on a sea shore.
Of course AF panic puts that all out of your head! So I finally got it right after taking time out every day to practise when NOT panicking and not in AF, so as it became a learned behaviour.
The anti-arrhythmic drug Flecainide as a pill in the pocket works too, but you need hospital tests to show your heart is structurally sound before it can be prescribed. And you take it with Bisoprolol for rate control. Worth asking about.
Since may 2023 I haven’t even seen a cardiac nurse or consultant just been my gp and then had a few 24- 14 days monitors which found eptopic beats and recommend some bisoprol for palpitations and basically if I go into af again then there take more action so I’m hoping it was a trigger and stress and it won’t come back I’m praying
