Hi,
I have been prescribed 15mg Lansoprazole to help protect possible stomach/gastric bleeding caused by Dabigatran.
Anyone else prescribed Dabigatran taking a PPI?
Do the benefits of taking PPI outweigh the possible risk of stomach bleed?

Hiya,
This is a dated from ( my homeland ) the Australian Government Dept of Health Theraputic Goods Administration. It is aimed at health care professionals but you may find it of some interest.

Have no idea if NHS or NICE have produced a similar analysis for UK.

I have been taking Dabigtran for a couple of years with no probs.
Consult your medical professional regarding if PPI use is mandatory or if other treatment is available. Long term PPI use has been linked to AFib. You don't want to make your condition worse.
Hi
There are 2 dosages of PRADAXA. I take the 110mg twice day. After stroke was on 110mg x twice but then transferred to local and they discharged me on 150mg x twice.
When I finally put discharge papers togther I had it change immediately.
Also I had thyroid cancer. With cancer it is advised not to take a anti-co.agulant.

PPIs seem to be pushed to anyone on an anticoagulant even if you don’t have reflux. I have tried them twice because of reflux but they don’t agree with me at all unfortunately. They do have downsides taken long term so unless you have symptoms of excess stomach acid I would prefer to be aware of any signs of GI bleeding and report immediately.
Dabigatran does tend to give digestive issues like reflux and bloating. Rather than take another permanent medication why not ask for Apixaban which is supposed to be gentler on the stomach? I still have digestive issues on Apixaban but they were worse on Dabigatran. Most people here are fine on Apixaban,
I was automatically put on a ‘protective’ PPI when starting on anticoagulants (in my case Rivaroxaban then Apixaban) but this was because I have a history of duodenal ulcer. I had only just weaned myself off 8 years on omeprazole then lansoprazole, so I wasn’t best pleased! Eventually I persuaded the medics that I was ok without, but on rare occasions when I feel the symptoms of gastritis I take a fortnight course just to blitz it.
I would definitely take long term PPIs if I needed to- they can be a life saver just as anticoagulants can. The big question is whether you do need to do so preventively, and if you haven’t a history of gastrointestinal erosion or bleeding, personally I wouldn’t feel it necessary. I’d definitely have more conversations about it with whoever is prescribing it for you. Do let us know what you decide Jx
I originally was put on rivaroxaban but I kept getting UTIs and raw indigestion feeling so was put on lansaprazole, but it didn’t help. So was changed to apixaban as I was told it was kinder to the brain and stomach and told just to use the lansaprazole for a few days as or when I felt the indigestion raw feeling. Touch wood no problems with apixaban and rarely have to use the lansoprazole except if I eat something which doesn’t agree
Good luck
