I have dreadful acid reflux when taking dabigatran..

Any advice as to what I can take to eliminate the symptoms.

Thanks

You can start with an H2 Blocker like Pepsid AC. If that doesn't work, then the next step is PPI's like Nexium. You can also try various lifestyle changes like smaller meals, nothing for a couple of hours before lying down, raising head of bed, etc.

I sympathize and emphasize. Going through the same thing now and Eliquis is probably contributing.

I take 150 mg twice a day. I learned after the first dose. I take it after breakfast and after dinner with a half a glass of milk.

Now I have no problems with acid reflux.

Good Luck 😊

The only way I found was to change anticoagulant. Apixaban is much easier with no gastric affects.

Take the meds with something like fruit or yogurt and avoiding eating any carbohydrates, especially bread, in the morning helped, sipping hot water and the most I resorted to was Gaviscon.

My husband still takes Dabigatron and still complains about gastric issues but refuses to change 🤷‍♀️

Not medically trained, but I would avoid PPIs they can cause other problems. ( absorbtion of vitamins)Dabigatran requires an acid environment to work, sob the capsules are acidic deliberately .

The best solution in my untrained view would be to change to another anticoagulant that is not acidic.

I was on dabigatran and was given PPI Lansoprazole in case of reflux. However I was only on it temprarily 25 days prior ablation and 4 months post ablation. 10 week in I was quite tired. tests showed I was low B12. I stopped the PPI and the problem went away.

I was initially on Dabigatron and had stomach issues. I changed to Edixaban, problem gone and it's only once day.

I was prescribed Omeprazole for acid reflux about 15 years ago. I stopped it about 4 months ago because I found that it was not helping me at all, I was also having to take Gaviscon. Since stopping Omeprazole I find that my stomach issues have improved 100% and I only need the odd spoonful of Gaviscon maybe once a month. I do not recommend that you follow my example as it may not work for you. I am only saying that it has worked for me. I watch what I eat a lot more as well.

Try Goli Gummies. Take two in morning. My son used to take before a meal. Both of us are off any meds and Goli now. We took for about 2 years. It helps change the ph balance in your stomach. So happy we found it. He had an ulcer and H. pylori bacteria. Lost 30 lbs. so much better now.

Dabigatran is not good for those of us with reflux issues.

As far as anticoagulants go, I was put on Apixiban for a month after a cardioversion for Atrial Flutter 5 years ago. I was really unwell and had a rash which the doctor thought was Shingles.

When I started with AF, my Electrophysiologist said I needed to be on anticoagulants for life. He put me on Xarelto. When I was about to have an ablation, they discovered a blood clot in my heart so took me off Xarelto and moved me onto Apixiban again and within a few days ai was back in hospital with the same symptoms I had when I’d been on Apixiban previously (which makes me think that it was a drug reaction, not Shingles previously).

My EP switched name to Dabigatran but I have a hiatus hernia and within a month, my reflux pain was unbearable so he switched me back to Xarelto. I think his preference is Apixiban but I can’t seem to take that so It is Xarelto for me (we don’t have Edixoban in Australia).
