do propafenone and digoxin cause hair to thin

I am reaching out to you wonderful people once more for your help. I started taking propafenone and digoxin 2 x daily at the lowest dose in May and my hair is getting very thin. I took amiodarone for 7 months before this and these are the only medicines I have taken for afib apart from apixaban which I have taken. for 2 years.

I cant find any information on thinning hair being a side of propafenone or digoxin. Has anyone experienced this? Could someone get back to me.

I have too many blood platelets and take hydroxyurea for the side effect which keeps low. Low dose 2 x daily, but have been taking for 4 years and didn't have this happening.

I would appreciate hearing any of your thoughts or information. Thanks very much.

Hope everyone is having a good day.

I took a high doseage of propafanone for several years with no hair loss. If you are on any anticoagulant these often can do this.

Please also remember that hair has 4 cycles and there is a natural shedding stage which can last several weeks to months. I went through this and my hair became very thin and I got a bit paranoid about it as my grandmother had bald patches by the time she was in her late 60’s but my very sensible hairdresser sat me down and explained what happens during these cycles, especially when we are ill (this was shortly after I had a bad dose of COVID). I started doing a few things she suggested, use cold/tepid water when washing, a scalp massage when putting on conditioner but what my hairdresser says is in her opinion the most important - protect from the environment - sun, wind and rain is detrimental so always wear a cap or hat when outside and then I also took to wearing a silk bonnet to bed -my hair looks shiny and feels amazing - so different to the dry, brittle, thinning hair of 3-4 years ago. Not instant results by any means BUT slowly, slowly over the months and years the hair regrew stronger and thicker. I still seem to have a top layer of very fine fly away hair yet to be tamed but underneath it is much stronger and therefore gives volume. I am 73.

I’ve been on Apixaban for over 10 years.

Hi, thanks for responding to my request. I am going to try some of your suggestions and look into further info. I already took to wearing a hat because my hair is so bad. I will pursue to trying to improve the condition. Thanks for the information, I appreciate this.

Thanks for your suggestions - I never thought about our dry winds, chinooks in Alberta can be drying to the hair as well as the skin (unlike the lovely moisture in the air for the wonderful british skin). I do have a satin hair covering for night use, but one more suggestion is that pillow cases should also be satin, i.e., one on the couch and on the bed. For cosmetic appearance, a wiggled part instead of a straight one, and if the hair is dark, a dusting of dark powder can make the top of hair look thicker.

A thought.. Are you also on Omeprazol? I was on it years ago, added as I was on a lot of pain relief (needed new Hip). My hair got thinner and was falling out.Years later I had it added as I was on Beta blocker and Apixaban for my AF, after a year or so same happened . Reading the bumf that comes with it, that's mentioned.

So now I only take occasionally, hair significantly better.
