had my Abalation with the fantastic professor Schilling and his team today at one Welbeck. All went as planned. Believe it last 1 1/2 hours and was heading home 3 hours later. Resting and recovering now. Groin is sore and bruised but otherwise feel fine.
having a check up with professor Schilling in 3 months time but wants me to stop taking my regular flecanide and bisoprolol in 2 weeks time
Thank you everyone for your positive comments last few days, they really did help

Thanks Jean. Yes feel ok, rubbish sleep tonight which was surprising as I was exhausted. Heart has completely behaved itself so far. MILF chest pain and tender, bruised groin. Just focussing on taking it very easy today
Great news Tom - told you it wouldn't be as bad as you thought it would!!!!!! The most important thing now is to rest up until you real better - give your heart time to recover.
Thanks Peony. Best of luck for yours. As others mentioned to be and they were absolutely right, after you’ve had it done you’ll feel like the worry maybe wasn’t neccesary but at the same time I understand how you feel cause I felt the same. You will fine
Tom that is so kind . Am sure I will thank you . Hadn’t heard anything , so rang GPs yesterday to check the referral had been done and they said “ so sorry we overlooked it .” Great isn’t it. If I hadn’t double checked I would have been sat waiting for an appointment that wouldn’t have come . I now know it has been done as have had notification from the national referral service ( new one to me.) When waiting lists are long time matters . Thanks Tom
Well done for chasing - are you having it under the NHS I assume? Have they’ve given you an indication of when? To note I’m 39 years old so the thought of having a heart op was a shock to get over also
The secretary said the waiting list is about seven months , but there is a triage system and I don’t know what criteria they use for that . At the moment my episodes are infrequent but symptomatic with rate in 180’s with rapid ventricular response . I can’t take beta blockers , and when I was in hospital they gave me diltiziem which dropped my low blood pressure to 80/40 when I went back into sinus and tried to get dressed to leave I nearly passed out and they kept me a further 8 hours while it wore off . I tried flec pip for the first time and all that did was give me a bone dry mouth for 24 hours. Am hoping because I am difficult to manage and end up in hospital that they may consider it easier and cheaper to ablate me sooner rather than later !
So sorry you have been faced with this so young , but fitter is better ! I worked with a surgeon who had the same at your age and he is still AF free and working aged 70 . I hope you get the same outcome . I am 69 and no health problems apart from AF
Sounds like it’s pretty symptomatic for you which it is/was for me also. I hope you manage to get that triage and seen soon but whenever you do I’m sure it’ll be worth it. The dream to be AF free for another 30yr are. Just wow! I got it in 2021 and manage to have about 7-8 months free and it felt like a lifetime!
I wish that for you Tom . And they are so much better at these days. The Professor doing mine said in his email he would give me “ a curative ablation” . They never used to talk about cure for AF . I will let you know how things develop and keep us posted as to your progress . My cardiologist has said he is hauling me in for an appointment then writing to the EP so fingers crossed
Thanks will do. By taking it easy I plan to drive minimal distances after 5 days. Short walks after 5-7 days and do nothing for the first 5 other than walking round the house and sitting on the sofa. Any other suggestions?
Tom that sounds a great sensible plan. Pottering about gently is perfect . One thing I found,I got suddenly very weary at times out of the blue. Just give in and listen to your body at those times! No lifting except book or remote control lol Not just heavy things ,seriously. All the best
My PF ablation was Oct 2. My first day home, I felt great and probably overdid it a bit. The next few days, I still felt fine but I did quite a bit of napping and paid attention to taking it easier than I felt strictly necessary.
I have the body battery function on my Garmin watch and have gaged my recovery using that. I'm doing better than expected at the end of the second week. On the Garmin user interface, there were quite a few reports of people not reaching a body battery level above 50% for a year after their ablation and I am already seeing 65-75% . My only setback was overindulging in some Belgium milk chocolates and, for a couple of days, that brought my body battery back down to where it had been right after the ablation.
His fantastic Prof. I’ve been under him and his team at Bart’s since I was 35 , 71 now . Was this private hospital ? His was a young doctor when he did my ablation .. do pleased for you it’s all gone well 🙏🏻
Hi Tom you must be so relieved that it’s over. I’m still thinking about getting it done so still at the stage of gathering information. I’m on flecainide and bisoprolol and it would be great to come off the medication as I’ve been on it now for around four years.
Was yours done privately please. Would you mind giving me a guide on how much it cost for Prof Schilling please. I hope you don’t mind. Thanks
I’m relived indeed albeit I think nothing is guranteed and I’ve got to get my recovery right still to give myself the best chance of success. I’ve also had it for 3/4 years am I’m on bisoprolol and flecanide. Hopefully not for much longer.
That’s great that it was through private health care. I’m guessing it’ll be £15 to 20k probably. Might be better if I phoned them to find out about their fixed rate prices. Thanks for the info. Best wishes
One of my favorite films is the "Waterboy", where a character says, "You can do it." That's you, Tom. Please do not rush into heavy lifting and movement. Glad, you are doing so well.
Had my Cardiac Ablation, first and hopefully last one, in August in the states. Wonderful surgeon. Dr. WJASOW. Have lost 24 pounds, only 2 glasses of wine per week since August 31 (went cold turkey 2 weeks before surgery), cut back on sugar, and will continue to cut back on food, bad fats, and calories. It took 50 years to create my former me, so, as my pulmonary guy said, " Slow and steady." Did you have an adverse reaction to the Covid-19 Booster Shot? I did with my heart beat slowing for 1.5 days and bouncing around, and now back to normal-went on a monitor.
Thank you - great film. It’s going to take a lot of discipline but the reward is very significant! Sounds like you have done amazing job in your journey well done! Havnt had a booster since getting AF so can’t comment I’m afraid.
Opps, I tried to post a bouquet 💐, but apparently the site wouldn't allow it. Oh well,I try to push ahead, but I will be ready if my diagnosis changes to rapid-fire adjust. Positive attitude, research everything, trying to change bad habits, and celebrating with my husband this 2nd chance.
Hi Tom. Glad you are out the other side and on the road to recovery. I had mine in July and had a few issues after two weeks but these seem to have resolved apart from days with ectopics. I am still breathless at times but not every day. It can take longer for some more than others to recover. Listen to your body and when tired rest up completely. Stay off alcohol 🍷. I wish you well with your recovery
Good luck. Hope it all works out - and please don't be disheartened if you go back a few steps at first. I was in sinus for about a week after my ablation before I started getting ectopics and then some afib a few weeks later.
My ticker was all over the place for about 6 months and I was back on Flecainide twice a day. Things were really bad after 6 months but then started getting better and about a year after my ablation I was down to about one short episode a month.
18 months later, I haven't had an episode for over 2 months and I only take 25mg of Flecainide once at night.
The follow up from the hospital has been non-existent but I'm classing it as a total success. I've been doing 50 mile bike rides and mile long lake swims towards the end of summer.
Great news Tom. You must be relieved. I had PFA last December and couldn't believe how straight forward it all seemed to go. The ticker has remained steady with no AF episodes at all and I'm off all drugs apart from blood thinners. I don't drink alcohol or caffeine at all now - don't want to risk it as I feel so good. A big cloud has lifted. Hope it continues smoothly for you.
Update 2 weeks post Ablation. All gone fantastic so far, no sign of AF creeping up as of yet. Have started to increase my exercise last 2-3 days with no issues. As per Professor schillings instruction, as of yesterday I have stopped taking my usual doses of flecanide and bisoprolol. Havnt notice any changes as of yet but I assume it takes a number of days to be out of my system anyways.
