Carto is the mapping system which lets the EP see the electrical activity of the heart. Pretty incredible technology. Didn't exist when I had my first ablation in 2002, but in my ablation 3 weeks ago it was used, and showed my original ablation still holding and a couple of areas for further ablation.
It's not the actual ablation catheter. It is used certainly with a RF ablation catheter, and probably with cryo or the other new one, name escapes me. It will help with clarity of where to ablate.
Yes, mine was classed as "complex", so under GA. Isn't correlated to use of Carto. Procedure was semi successful in that it stopped my fast atrial rhythms but they couldn't ablate my ectopics as they were right below my artificial aortic valve (due to an aortic dissection 7 years ago) and they can't take a catheter through that. Meds are helping though.
