Hi, having a a.f carto ablation 11/10/2018, and wondering if I still continue to take verapamil, also, hoping that's the end of the mega emergency trips to th e.r, usually early a.m on the weekend. Sods law!!!

You should speak to your EP about drugs. Some wish you to stay on them some may not.
hi, BobD, i saw the anaesthetist today, she said, 'let's see how the ablation goes' so I still don't know. i told her I had an echocardiogram in 2013, which showed aortic regurgitation, no notes about it, I've mentioned it several times, to my G.P, and several cardiologists, and was told'no big deal,' now , with three days to go til' the ablation, all the health professionals I've seen are wanting more tests. I'll spit chips if there are any more delays. trouble is, an overburdened health system, and no-one seems to know what anyone else is doing. being a retired R/n, I've seen too much!! Thanks for replying, nice to know there are people like you supporting others. P.S, I've worked in most of the hospitals that I've had these procedures in!!
I think a lot of EPs like the heart to heal in some peace and quiet so maintain drugs at least until the end of the three months blanking period. Don't forget we have two fact sheets on Preparing for and Recovering from an Ablation which may be helpful to you.
Hi, BobD, many thanks for reaching out. I'm on my own up here in the Adelaide hills, so feel somewhat isolated. I am so aware I should not be alone following Thursday's procedure and discharge, but there is no-one to call on, so I'll do what I usually do, get on with it. Wish me luck!! Kind regards. P.s I have all the info from the first ablation, not sure whether knowing what I know is beneficial to my state of mind or not.
Just wanting to wish you good luck with your second ablation this week. I hope it is more comfortable this time. I can see resting up afterwards won’t be easy when you are on your own out of town. is it too far to order in some Chinese or pizza 🙂 ?
Where did you train? Keep in touch to let us know how things are going.
Hi, Oyster, so good to get emails . Ive stocked up on easy cook meals, my son would usually visit, but fractured his wrist, so can't drive . I'm English trained, started as a fifteen year old 'pre-nursing' cadet in 1950, when students lived in the nurses Home. no union, really prehistoric conditions; ran away from an abusive home, started at a 90 bed cottage hospital, Victoria, and went on to the Prince Of Wales at Tottenham to finish a 6 year gruelling training. Came to Australia in 1969, worked at Liverpool Hospital, then in S.A worked in all the big hospitals here in Adelaide, including Glenside and Hillcrest, and James Nash, 'cos I was psych trained. I can honestly say I've never had a dull moment; extraordinary life, when I think about it. May I ask, are you a health professional? Since I live alone, and am not in good health, I miss communicating with others. Just watched Red Symons eldest son's lifelong battle with cancer, a remarkable human being, so sad to lose inspirational people like him. Compared with his health problems, mine are minor. Again, so good to hear from you, many thanks,
Wow, are you really 83 and about to have your second ablation?
I have sent you a pm in “Chat” above.
Hi, Oyster, can't believe it myself. don't look or feel 83, (my body tells me otherwise!! ) keep mentally stimulated, do mega knitting, lovely animals, knitting the Shelf Ratties at the moment, give away most of the toys. Thanks for your good wishes. Kind Regards.
Hi Mogold7tamm. I was just reading your recent post & I would just like to wish you well for your ablation this week. You seem like you are quite an inspirational lady 🤗
All the best 🌼
Good to meet you! 5.25am here in the Adelaide Hills, couldn't be bothered to stay in bed anymore. D.day tomorrow, very different this time, the first ablation was just that, this time, I've had a heart C.T, echocardiogram, mega blood tests-------. The sonographer was red eyed and sniffling when I finally went in, asked if she had a cold, she said, ' no, I was just verbally abused by a patient's mother.' Being a retired psych nurse, I talked with her, and we finally laughed about hostile patients/relatives. Really no laughing matter, however , necessary to get some perspective on it. My last emergency trip to th Royal Adelaide hospital was accompanied by the now familiar 'don't abuse the ambulance workers;, and mega beefy security guards in the hospital. The times we live in! Thank you for your good wishes, will post my no doubt interesting experiences once I'm safely home. Cheers!!!
Good morning.
I'll look forward to seeing your post when you are back home safe & sound. Take care & have a nice day 🌝
Hi, Tamla, many thanks. Still dark here, and I've spent the last hour reading messages. I didn't realise contributers were in the U.K, thought the posts were in Australia. Odd to think we're in different time zones.Regards.
There's members in the forum from all over the world but yes it's fascinating to think we are chatting on opposite sides of the world at this moment. Your day is just starting & mine is just ending
True, I've only just discovered H.E, and it's a revelation, so good to have encouraging posts from those I'll never meet. I'll be thankful when tomorrow is over, merely trying to arrange transport from the Hills down to Adelaide is a challenge, let alone the pre-ops, and then the procedure. Catch you on the other side!!! Regards, Shirley.
I've only been on the forum myself a short while having just been diagnosed in April & the support is amazing. I've no doubt you will be so relieved when the procedure is finished & you can start your recovery so yes we'll all see you on the other side!!
I've enjoyed chatting with you Shirley 😊
Thanks, will post as soon as I'm feeling human again!! Regards, and thank you to all who offered good wishes.Shirley.
Good morning Shirley. Just wanted to send you a big cyber hug for the big day. I'll be thinking of you ☘
Good morning, your post is heart warming!! don't get admitted 'til 10am, so Country Health pickup at 9am. gives me a chance to go down through the Adelaide suburbs , and see how they've changed, don't drive there anymore. Just getting light here, and I wonder what tomorrow will bring. Kind regards, Tamla, Shirley.
Hello Shirley. I see you've sent a few responses here and there just recently with words of encouragement about positive thinking and you are saying you are recovering slowly all on your own.
I hope you have enough practical support. There are warm wishes from the forum.
Would you say those of us a few years behind you who are not rushing into ablation can hope that we too can perhaps follow your example when in our eighties? Or would your advice be not to hold back and make the most of still being in the seventies?
My EP said he saw age as no barrier providing general health was good.
All the best to you!
Hi Rellim. Shirley is an absolute inspiration & I know she will be reading this. She's a lovely lady 😊
Hi, Rellim, nope, I'm the chief cook and bottle-washer, my neighbours are young with families, so I don't have help. What I do have is a ferocious inability to admit defeat, ( not always a positive attribute.!) Felt o.k after the procedure, but the last three days have been rough. Rellim , do as much as you can while you can, no-one knows what tomorrow will bring, and living with regret is a waste of time. I look back at my life, and realise, I hadn't a clue how precious good health is. I never drank alcohol, smoked, ate junk food---. I think my heart, apart from heavy milage, flipped from a stressful life. I plan on doing it all differently next time round!!!. kind regards, Shirley.
Those are wise words! But I hope you don't need to do too much right now and can take it easy for a while and have the pleasure of being a little self indulgent.
All the best!
Thanks, between you and me, I'm able to do as much or as little as I need to survive!! Regards, Shirley.
It can be so good when people don't interfere and you can please yourself!
Hi, Rellim, like most things in life, having no-one to say, ''What?!' has positive and negative influences in my life. I'm Googling herbal Hops capsules to see if that's what's making me nauseous in the mornings, it can't be post op meds after seven days?
Well, a number of things cause sickness in the mornings ….. and herbal hops could be one of them!
Hi, Rellim, Dr Google said, hops in therapeutic doses ease nausea, I think brufen is the culprit. I realise it can precipitate irregular heartbeats, but, 46 years of nursing had left me with chronic pain from deteriorated lumbar spine, and bilateral bursitis. I don't take heavy duty painkillers, but sitting and sleeping is a trial. tonight I'll take one chamomile capsule, and one hops. Managed to go shopping today, after ten days at home, triumph!! Heard about the father of the assistant where I buy wool, just diagnosed with lung cancer, every day I say thank you for my life, there are always people worse off. Another mega reply, but it gives me a link to others. regards to you, Shirley.
It's so good to be able to chat with the other side of the world! Glad you've been able to shop, but that's sad news. Yes, I'm saying my thanks every day - many things are worse than AF! But it needs to be made to take a back seat in our lives - or, even better, leave the room!
Hi Mogold7tamm
Just checking in to see how you are getting on and to send best wishes for your continuing recovery.
The indian summer here seems to be coming to an end, and I guess for you, spring is around the corner.
Take care.
Hi, Oyster, yes Spring is nearly over, getter warmer here. I'm still not well, but am philosophical about it. Hope your'e well?
Yes, on good form thanks. Cat sitting while the family are at Chessington amusement park. Are you getting good medical support?
Maybe your son could help you upload some of the photos you mentioned previously.
Hi, Oyster, forgive the delayed reply. been sick as a dog, and barely managing. Feel better today. Oyster, do you read all my posts? . can't work out if everyonr reads everything, or just posts sent to them. Cheers!
Hi Mogold7tamm
Sorry you are having a rough time. Do you think it is a problem related to the ablation, or is it your medication? Gastroparesis due to vagal nerve irritation can follow ablation.
Every original post and reply appears on “News Feed” accessed via the Home button at the very top left of this page. I find this a better way of reading replies than following individual original posts which are listed separately as Latest Posts under the other Home button further down the page.
If you reply to another member, they are notified. You can click to follow a thread you are interested in or follow individual members.
So yes everyone can read everything if they have enough time. Personal messages via Chat above are private.
Thanks Oyster, started anticoagulants after i saw the cardiologist this friday 26th. He was horrified that I'd refused. medication makes me ill, it wasn't that I was ignorant of the risks associated with a.f, just couldn't stand the thought of feeling as lousy as I felt yesterday. Life sucks at times!!!
