The AF Association have been approached by researchers from The University of Liverpool, UK who are collaborating with the Atrial Fibrillation Association to develop a research proposal.

Please read the following if you might be interested:

Dear All

We would like to discuss our ideas with people who have atrial fibrillation who have also experienced a stroke in the last three years because this is the group of people that the project will focus on. Below is some further information outlining the proposed project.

If you are interested in joining an online discussion group with Liverpool University and 6-7 other people who have atrial fibrillation and a previous stroke, then please contact the AF Association via email info@afa.org.uk, rather than contact the Admins on the Forum. Then we will arrange a mutually convenient time for the online meeting.

We will explain the project in more detail during the meeting. We are interested in your views and opinions about our proposal - there are no right or wrong answers.

People with atrial fibrillation are more likely to develop mild cognitive impairment (memory problems) and dementia than those without atrial fibrillation. Having a stroke also increased these risks. Recently, a new type of drug for diabetes, sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, have been found to reduce the chances of people with diabetes developing heart problems and there is some evidence that these drugs (SGLT2 inhibitors) might slow down the progression of Alzheimer’s disease in people with diabetes. Given the positive effects of these drugs in heart problems and Alzheimer’s disease, it is important to determine whether the benefits extend to people with atrial fibrillation who are at high risk of developing cognitive impairment and dementia.

We are planning to run a trial comparing the use of these drugs (SGLT2-inhibitors) to usual care on cognitive function, quality of life and emotional well-being.

Thank you for taking the time to read this information.

Best wishes

Professor Deirdre Lane, Professor of Cardiovascular Health, University of Liverpool, Liverpool, UK;

If you are interested, please contact the Patient Services Team at info@afa.org.uk along with your consent to share you name, email address and telephone number for the purposes of the research study only.

Thank you on behalf of the AF Association.

Hi Sam. I have permanent AF, I've had a stroke, and in the past I've been a stroke lived-experience participant for Professor Fiona Rowe's team at Liverpool University. I am also a participant in studies for several UK universities. I'll contact patient services to see if I can be of use.
