I am aware a few of you have hiatal hernias and don't want to scare people. My case is rare! Some of you will have seen my previous posts re increasing GERD,pain & breathlessness. Also remarks after x-rays like "you can certainly tell you have a hernia".

After a delay in getting an early appointment I rang 111and they advised go to A& E.Almost sent home with antibiotics but a doctor ordered CT scan.

I will not go into the gory details but a horrific 9 day stay and a 3 1/2 hours op rather than 90 mins I am now back home recovering. However I am not sure I passed the SAS endurance test but still in NSr.

As I say any op is not good news if you don't need it but if things are getting really bad do ask you gp to get it checked out.

I have a large sliding hiatus hernia Katz so l know how troublesome they can be. I am aware they can get strangulated and become serious. Is this what has happened to you? I was recently offered surgery, but declined for the moment and l am coping with new medication. I know the operation is invasive and, of course, in the region of the heart, so you are doing well for it not to trigger AF. A hiatus hernia can exasperate AF when it becomes inflamed. My cardiologist sympathises with me. Hope you soon recover and the operation is a success. It sounds as if you have been having an awful time. Let us know how you are. 🥰

WARNING GORY DETAILS.Slightly more complicated than that.Over 50% of stomach in chest, flipped upside down and stuck to chest wall .

As I say THIS is RARE! Don't panic people.

I just wonder how long I had been like that.Excercise classes and all.

Oh my lord! That's horrendous. Glad to hear it's rare and better still you've been attended to. No wonder you were in AF all the time. Pretty sure I have a sliding hiatus hernia. I'm very careful about what I eat and when I eat and luckily it misbehaves only rarely.

I think it would be more helpful if you summarise the symptoms that sent you to A&E? Those who prefer not to read gory details can always skip. I am fairly sure I have a hernia but wouldn’t know when to panic…..

Further to Buffafly.....let us know a bit more please ! I'm sure mine has flipped me into AF > dccv on more than one occasion. Gastroenterlogist told me in ' lockdown' that an op would be incredibly risky. ( I was aware of large bulge in my left side....GP concerned it could be spleen so had quick CT scan which showed large hiatus hernia)

Hi JuliaI am not a doctor.I will do another post listing my symptoms and edit this with a more prominent gory header.

Yes I believe a simple hiatus op shouldn't be taken lightly especially with our other problems, but it could be worth checking with GP for at least a CT scan or something less intrusive than a camera down to your stomach.

Hi

Hernias are of value to get fixed asap. They can get worse.

Mine was operated within 3 weeks an indirect ingroinal hernia and it was then I was talked into a hysterectomy and they took a spotty ovary.

That was a useless time of fishing trying to pull the end of my line back. No I didn't have a fish at the end of it.

I've pulled up a weighed net from a local wharf.

You said you must have had a weakness there.

Better fixed otherwise in a groin it can strangle me by cutting off blood supply.

cheri Joy.

Your experience puts mine into perspective and I forgot to take my Omeprazole this morning but guess one day without it won’t matter as I didn’t manage to get it back on repeat prescription for a while before. I did do exercises instead for a while but my fatigue is worsening.
