Has anyone done less than 12 hours between doses of Apixaban. I had to go to A&E today and couldn't take my Alpixaban til 1pm. So it has thrown me.

The other day I forgot to take my Edoxaban, usually I take it at 8.30 am but I was out when I realised so it was 3 pm when I eventually had it. Since then I have tried incrementally to move back to my original time bit by bit. Is this something you could do? Why not ask a pharmacist the best way forward. It is always a worry when on a DOAC so I appreciate your concern. Regards Kathleen

I have been late with a dose, adjusted times when I remembered and took 2 within 24 hr period.

Would not worry even if you wait to next dosage time. I was off for 2 days before colonoscopy and had no issues.

I wouldn't overly worry about it. I had to have a tooth extracted recently and my dentist suggested missing the Apixiban dose on the morning of the appointment. Then continuing as normal in the evening. (I tend to be 8am and 8pm) Not wanting to bleed excessively after extraction I stopped the evening before as a precaution. Everything went well with little bleeding of gum, and back onto regular dosage that evening. I felt neither up nor down with missing a full day's dosage.

Hope this helps allay your fears.

I don't stick to 12 hours precisely any day. I had to stop two years ago for colonoscopy for a couple of weeks if I recall.

I am rarely exactly 12 hours between doses. Nothing bad has happened yet.

Yes I have, occasionally when playing Baldur's Gate 3 I forget to take it until about 3 hours after when I should, even though my phones alarm went off. Doesn't seem to have any effect or cause any problems. It's only when I check my pill case after I wind it up for the night I see that I haven't taken it. So the next dose will be less than the 12 hour period because I never miss the next morning one as that is my get up alarm for the day.

All the best.

If something has occurred to throw the dosage out,I just bring forward a little for the next dose .Apixaban being twice a day accommodates this well.x

I wouldn't worry, our body clocks aren't a very reliable way of telling the time. Most people don't bother changing the time they take their meds when we change the clocks for BST and nothing happens!

I try to take mine at 7am and 7 pm give or take half an hour, Last night I was out and forgot to take the tablets with me so it was 9:30 pm before I took it. This morning I had my dose as usual around 7 am. The half life of Apixaban is approximately 12 hours which means that even after 12 hours there's still a certain amount of it in your system albeit less effective. If the gap was 6 hours late I would simply skip the dose and take when next due. Missing several consecutive doses would be more of a concern.

Hi, never really understood this concern about when to take apixaban. I was told twice a day, so that means am and pm to me whether there is 12 hrs or more in between I live with. I have never been told that apixaban is hourly sensitive.

I don't worry about it. I have alarms on my phone for 10am and 10pm and I take it as close as I can. But if I miss one for a few hours I take it as soon as I realise. I don't adjust the following dose.
