Irritation at catheter entry points post ablation

I had my ablation 11 days ago with entry points in both groin areas and also epicardially through incision below breast bone.

All healed well with hardly any bruising at all. However I'm experiencing intense irritation...itching.... from the entry points....driving me mad! I dealt with the chest one, which was closed with glue, with a small amount of Eumovate. Any ideas please ? I've just taken Piriton but no help yet.

I never had this problem with my 4 previous ablations.

Five ablations - wow! I just had my first three months ago. I didn’t have irritation but I did have very extensive bruising at the three entry points in my groin and arms. I couldn’t tolerate wearing my normal underwear for weeks because it pressed on the bruises. Could that be the case with you? Even though the bruises are not showing, perhaps the skin is still very sensitive. I got by with some loose French knickers until my bruises healed. And loose outer clothing too. In your case, could you manage without a bra until the skin is less tender? Wishing you a speedy recovery😊

Thank you. I can take some of that on board apart from going braless! The chest wound is now ok thank goodness. I must ensure my washing powder is non bio. It's normally Persil non bio but I think a more scented variety has crept in and that won't have exactly helped.

My go to skin soother is Aloe Vera gel. Cool , calming and antiseptic. Ten days after my ablation, no issues with groin wounds nicely healing and dramatic bruising starting to fade away.

I have very sensitive skin and always suffered after a cardioversion., The only thing that helped was hydrocortisone cream which was almost instantaneous.

Thank you 4chickens. I think I have some in my medicine haul (!).....I'll have a search.

It could be that you are allergic to a dressing or product they used for closure or something new that you are using at home? Have you changed washing powder or fabric softener - I wouldn't use fabric softener for a while and check any changes to soaps or creams that you use. Hope this helps.

Thank you. Yes, I've started to think along those lines. I never use fabric softener but have used a different washing gel and may have been a bit heavy handed with it!

Hope that's the answer.

l sometimes itch when l am healing. I would think this hot weather is not helping. Perhaps help to let the air circulate, if possible, to the wounds. If it doesn’t clear up ask Pharmacist tomorrow. Hope you feel better soon.

You have my greatest sympathy because I suffered from Urticaria numerous times after ablations triggered by the cardioversion and ecg pads & stickers.

Sorry but I can only offer support not remedy.

In my case no medication, cream or antihistamines worked only giving it time worked.

My EP wants me to have a pacemaker but I am resisting it for fear of a reoccurrence.

Thanks Pete. I recall you saying this in the dim and distant past. I've never had a reaction before but have had bad cases of urticaria in the past.Seen to be a bit calmer today.

I'm also wondering whether the Colchicine tablets I've had to take for the post operative pain (pericarditis?) triggered it. I'm stopping them and see how I go.

Hope you are keeping well and AF free?

Yes I had this back in 2013 - 2017 when I had a number of ablations. Since 2017 I have not had any cardiac work done and for the past 2 years have been AF Free believe it or not. My Urticaria has abated but I do get pressure urticaria hence my reluctance to have a pacemaker.

Not sure about the Colchicine I just looked it up and there is nothing to suggest allergic reaction. For sure Steroids have had an adverse effect on me so much so that when they gave me tablets to take to minumise reaction prior to an ablation I had so bad urticaria that the anaethetist cancelled the procedure.
