Results from Ultrasound scan

Hi can anyone put my mind at ease regarding results from recent scan? I've received a letter from EP saying top chamber of heart left atrium is seriously dilated also central leakage across mitral valve. I'm on dronedarone and bisoporol ( extra in af). This has made me ask the forum if anyone else has the same conditions and how are they coping.

Would really appreciate a friendly reassurance.

I wrote a few weeks ago and received many helpful comments. Thanks to everyone's concern

I had an echocardiogram Jan '24, shortly after diagnosis. Enlarged left atrium, severe mitral regurgitation (valve stretched and mobile) left ventricle ejection fraction (EF) reduced to 28% (should be around 55%). Was booked for a cardioversion but decided to refer me to Electrophysiologist and go straight for ablation due to stage 2 heart failure. (HF)

Was already on edoxaban and bisoprolol, cardiologist added digoxin (rate), candersartan (blood pressure) and dapaglifozin (heart failure).

Had PVI ablation mid march, digoxin stopped, bisoprolol reduced

Follow up appt late April, so far so good, bisoprolol reduced again, now on 1.25mg daily, another echo booked

Early May had echo, left atrium has shrunk, mitral valve has tightened up, now just mild regurgitation which is normal as we age (I'm 62) and EF up to 50% which is low normal. I was so happy that I cried when the sonographer told me.

There is a saying AF begets HF and HF begets AF, my team decided to treat the HF with drugs whilst awaiting an urgent ablation which the calmed everything down my AF is now (hopefully for ever????) under control which had allowed my heart to repair itself in a few months!

Thanks for reply sounds similar to me. I had an ablation 18months ago which didn't work hence dronedarone. I wasn't sure until your reply if another ablation would help. 17 hours in AF every 10 days is wearing me out both physically and mentally. Not sure what to do next.

I had some complications, femoral artery damage needing urgent repair survey under a GA , 10 days after ablation. However I wouldn't hesitate to do it again if I needed to. I'm feeling great now, pretty much back to normal, just working on my fitness now. I hadn't realised just how unwell I had become, was in persistent AFib 24/7 from November until March. Was diagnosed in early January as Xmas and various things in December got in the way of going to the Dr. My heart rate was up to 176 when in AFib and I was very breathless. I'm not a fan of A&E so just struggled on. I would seek help earlier next time.
