Three years ago I was finally diagnosed with PAF was put on lots of medication . In the last year my teeth have gone quite dark and are breaking so easily it is quite frightening how much the deteriation is happening . Could this be the cocktail of drugs ? Has anyone had the same issue . ?
I am currantly taking 10mg Apixiban... 240 mg Verapamil ... 25 microgram Levothyroxine 40 mg Pantoprazole ..100mg Flecainide .. Fastair inhaler.. 20mg Atorvastatin .Vitamain D and Magnesium glycinate.
In 2023 I have diagnosed with CKD stage 3 and mild FLD and Sleep apmnia I use CPAP machine every night .
Up until 2021 when I factured my pelvis the only health issue I had was mild Asthma and Faulty heart valve.
I am 68 . female. Since my fall I have tried so hard to keep positive with everything but the loss of my teeth is the final blow. Feel so low at the moment . Is it possible the combination of drugs could be responsible?
Thankyou

I am not a medic so can only suggest what may be the problem. It could be lack of calcium and/or oesteoporosis if you have fractured your pelvis previously. That is a big bone to crack. You really need to consult your GP or your dentist...probably both to try and sort this out. I can well imagine this is very worrying .Ones appearance is so important as we age.
I think your dentist is out of date . I would find another one if you can. I am 86 and my teeth are in very good shape I do not spend heaps of money on them. Yes.I do have a couple of crowns and quite a few fillings but nothing as you describe of you own teeth. No breaks or cracks.
I also agree with 10gingercats - I’d try and find a new dentist too if I were you. What you are experiencing doesn’t sound ‘age related’ and that’s an easy cop out. They should be advising you on preventing problems, rather than reacting to them.
I do go privately I have to admit as I wasn’t happy with my practise, many years ago now. I pay monthly insurance. Sadly I know it can be difficult finding dentists these days, but you don’t want to be fobbed off as an age thing. I wondered if there was another dentist at this practice you could try. I hope you get some help with them soon.
Presumably you would have had a follow up DXA scan after fracturing your hip? If you did not I would ask GP for a referral as soon as possible to bone specialist for full analysis and advice.
That’s interesting as my teeth which used to be white are now brownish- I never thought it might be the Flecainide but perhaps it is- and if so that might explain why the toothpastes that are supposed to whiten teeth haven’t made any difference to mine! Still I have reached 80 and still have most of mine so “mustn’t grumble!” No breakages though- just a couple of odd fillings that fell out!
Yes, I can relate and put it firmly on the concoction of drugs I am taking, also thinning hair. I go regularly to the dentist (I know lucky me) and try and keep things under control and I do sympathise with you. Since having breast cancer in 2008 I take a daily calcium tablet and since breaking my hip too years ago whilst playing table tennis I also now take Alendrolic Acid once a week to avoid Osteoporosis, however I have never, to my knowledge, had a calcium deficiency.
Lol, I was playing doubles when my 18 stone partner barged into me.......sadly I won't be playing again. The surgeon wanted to know why a 78 year old was playing table tennis doh!
Have you asked your dentist> After a heart attack I'm simply on famotidine, simvastatin and aspirin but have had a lot of teeth break in the last couple of years although they don't change colour. But then I've always had poor teeth. As a very prem baby I didn't have enough enamel on them.
Any chance you can find a dentist who will help you figure this out? Dr. Internet lists osteoporosis, starvation, too much sugar and bad oral hygiene as causes for teeth to fall out, but not medications, even weird combinations of strong medications. Sorry this is happening to you. I had a tooth break and fall out recently, but my dentist had warned me it would. (I earned my bad teeth the traditional way, through heredity and neglecting them in my rebellious 20s)
I was drinking lots of fruit juices at night, not necesarily rinsing them with water.
When my teeth were sore, later found to have a tooth with infection under and another which needed a filling but Dr said pull it out. Honestly it needed little pulling.
I take 125mg Synthroid having had a thyroidectomy with 12 lymphs taken (2 infected) for papillary cancer. I thought it was the thyroxin.
So drinking fruit drink allow an hour before brushing.
Also having to rely on left upper teeth for eating apparently puts more pressure on those few teeth.
Unfortunarely my cancer has returned showing ?in ultra sound SCAN which lead to a DYE CT and now RAI Scan scheduled for 6 May - 10 May Auckland Hospital. It appears 3 lymphs need removing but one is 19mm x 9mm the sizeof the carcinoma in my thyroid. The 2 tiny ones are in front of other.
Avorastatin interferes with thyroxine. Statins play on my just done in late October Right Shoulder rotator cuff. The upper arm throbs.
Also remember to take your Lev.... on empty stomach by 4 hours and no food for 1 hr. No milk or iron for 4 hours. To aid absorption.
For what reason do you take Lev.. 25mg daily?
There is a lot of meds there.
Avorastatin the statin is inclined to higher Diabetis to prediabetis.
If I have a higher Cholesterol reading I take them for a week only. Even 10mg makes a difference. My tri-glycerides are under 2.
I take the minimum thyroxin for TSH @ 1.0-2.0 only.
Minimum of 2 heart pills.
CCB Calcium Channel Blocker 120mg for control of rapid AF Diltiazem AM
BB Bisoprolol 2.5mg for control of BP. PM.
PRADAXA 110mg x twice DAY.
Flixonase 1 spray up each nostril when nessary.
Colofac 160mg AM 1 tab with big drink water 1 hr before breakfast works when necessary.
Sorry to hear this is happening to you. Your tooth loss could be the result of many things: a couple medications you've listed can cause some bone loss taken over a very long period of time; plus hereditary factors (can't do much about this) and lifestyle (here you can). I'm the same age as you and I still have all my teeth (along with 2 crowns and one with a filling) so it's not age. But my teeth were yellowing and I found out by my dentist that in some toothpastes and mouthwashes is the ingredient cetylpyridinium chloride and even a form of fluoride called stannous fluoride can yellow some people's teeth. Plus as we age we begin to lose some of the enamel on our teeth. But I'd get a second opinion of another dentist.
Each tooth that breaks ,chips, I asked my dentist what was happening. Was there 4 weeks ago when another tooth chipped (another filling .) His reply always the same 'age related ' and gave me prescription for strong flouride tooth paste .
Think it's a bit late for that as mouth full of fillings.
So my task for today is to try find another dentist although in think I stand more chance of finding gold in the local stream. .
I feel your pain, when I was diagnosed I was told that Apaxiban can cause teeth to loosen, my dentist confirmed this. After 2 years my teeth started to loosen, I have 4 at the moment also despite all my efforts they had discoloured. I am now having to think about false teeth to replace them 😓
Not sure about the drugs being the culprits. But I would ask why you are only taking 40mcg of Levothyroxine? That's a piddling dose, not even a full starter dose. Taking too little will make things worse not better. We don't top up our failing thyroid with Levo. Once we start taking it our own thyroid stops producing the hormone we need so our dose must be physiological. You are way below that. I'd go ask some questions on the Thyroid board of this site if I were you. Time to start learning about that condition because it's major and it's currently being hidden in a host of other issues.
