i had an Ablation in September and have developed this horrendous cough, that’s causing me to nearly throw up. My AFib started in 2014, when I had a nasty coughing virus, so I’m scared this coughing virus will bring it back. This one seems much worse. Has anyone else had this horrible cough. ? Any tips on how to ease it.? Thanks.

Scared my AFib will come back due to very nasty cough.
Check with your doctor before using a cough suppressant if you have atrial fibrillation.
To state the obvious, given your symptoms have you tested for Covid? Early rapid testing may give false negatives so multiple tests are suggested spread out over 9 days.

If you are concerned that your coughing could trigger your aFib , or you are feeling symptoms in general , call the GP for a ring back for some advice.Try drinking cool water in sips throughout the day and after a coughing session has stopped and you are feeling sore , it can help cool the inflammation in the chest and airways as well as helping to manage your heart rate via the nervous system reaction to temperature in the body.
Keep well hydrated in general.
Keep at a steady temperature either with clothing or heating in the room .
Keep your head , shoulders and chest raised up on comfortable, supportive pillows at night and try to sleep on your back . Keep the upper body upright during the day with legs raised. This will help to manage your heart rate and blood pressure and keep your airway open reducing coughing.
Warm drinks of decaffeinated green tea with a little honey can also help relieve the coughing and soothe your throat.
Take care and I hope you feel better soon , Bee
Thank you for your good advice, it’s much appreciated. I have put an extra pillow on my bed, which helps. I did sleep a little longer last night, but had to get up for the loo at 5.50 am, which started me coughing again. 🤞🤞my ablation will hold, no matter what infections I get. It seemed to be infections, that was the biggest trigger of my AFib, which is why I’m worried.
Keep a drink of water near your bed and have a drink before you sit around on the bed , and another drink while you sit on the edge of the bed then take a few breaths before you get up to go to the toilet, this should help prevent you having a coughing fit from getting up too quickly. Hope you feel better soon , Bee
I have a cough at the moment ,I was advised pineapple has bromelian which helps with congestion. Tried it in a smoothie today, think it is helping to thin secretion. Me 1 yr post ablation and have stayed in sinus in spite of cough.
I understand most of these type of bugs concentrate most in the nose and throat, certainly initially. I therefore have stocked up on nose and throat specialist medication to snuff it out early or as a prophylactic.
I had a similar bad cough but was more worried about my suspected hernia being triggered 🤭. Just used Strepsill throat lozenges & slow release Vit C 1gm.
Friends have had this. Some have been tested and its been found to be the RSV virus - check it out on NHS or WHO Sites. Usually not serious, but can be. I think lots here report that AF visits is we have a bad infection or virus. But that doesn't mean it has to stay. Are you able to use a nebuliser? These cN really.help with stressed respiratory infections to ease symptoms. You can buy easily on Amazon and safer than using g steam.because no danger of burning and the droplets are smaller.
Thank you. I will check it out. I’ve never used a nebuliser. Not having trouble breathing, it seems to be in my throat, not my chest fortunately. Covid tests negative,. Not been sleeping very well, but hopefully things will improve, just wish I could stop worrying that AFib will return because of this virus. I suppose if I don’t get it back, then the ablation will probably have been successful, so 🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞
Sometimes we get left with a post viral cough trigger. I ded you mention it's 'in your throat'. If it persists there are speech therapists who specialise in upper airway disorders and can help with ongoing coughing. Just a thought for the future.
