Beta blocker combined with a cold medicine

Currently have a virus with a bad lingering cough which is keeping me awake at night. My PCP told me to take Delsym nighttime cough relief. Since being on Metoprolol 25mg ER succinate I’ve not had to take any kind of cold Med or antibiotic. Wondering if any of you kind souls have ever had a bad reaction to any cold meds while taking beta blockers. Also concerned about going into Afib. Thank you so much!

Most cold and flu remedies can cause AF so be prepared. Is the cough productive or dry?

Pholcodeine is a cough suppressant but don' t use if productive as you need to get rid of the crud.

Having worked in the industry for years, I can say that very little that will work on a cough, even if the marketing would have you believe otherwise. Codeine is said to have some effect on the cough reflex (or pholcodine - a less strong but similar drug) but the evidence is poor. The problem is that the cough reflex is very powerful (for good reason) and the irritation is where no medicine can reach (for good reason, too). I'd try steam inhalation since that reaches the parts that other drugs cannot. if the cough is dry, adding menthol (i.e. Vick inhalant or crystals) is unlikely to help but can be tried.

A dry cough can rarely be heart related, and more often stomach reflux related - just a thought, however unlikely.

Well thank you so much for your reply. I guess my body is doing what needs to be done and is functioning as it should. I need patience in a bottle😊

I recently had a bad bout of covid then covid induced lung/chest infection, then chest X-ray as GP thought might have also contracted pneumonia. With the covid and infection I had a really horrible phlegm cough day and night (nasty) and I asked both my GP and pharmacy which cough medicine would be best? They both replied that cough meds were not the answer and both recommended the old treatment of honey and lemon. It worked. I do still have the odd bouts of coughing but another round of honey and lemon does the trick. So soothing

Good luck snd hope you feel better soon

The last time I had a cough (2016) my pharmacist recommended N acetyl cysteine. This came in sachets which you diluted in water. 200mg x3 a day. It worked like a charm as it makes phlegm more fluid and easier to cough up . You can buy this in capsule form online but usually the dosing is 600mg per capsule. . It also supports the immune system. I don't know whether the sachets are available in pharmacies in the UK.

Like you, I’m also on metoprolol 25 mg and getting over a Covid cough. Im keeping a vaporizer going near me at night and this is keeping the cough loose. Honey and lemon Ricola (plus real honey in lemon or chamomile or elderberry tea) helps a lot. I did have a few AF episodes for a week but now that I tested negative, they’ve all stopped. (My mother swears by a little bourbon to cut through tough coughs… but we do live in Kentucky where bourbon’s both a kitchen and a medicine cabinet staple, ha ha!! This, too, shall pass if we keep getting it up and out of our systems…. Blessings! Diane S

I second the steam inhalations as a suggestion, and it gives your skin a deep cleanse at the same time. Get better and stay beautiful at the same time. Win win.

Honey and lemon is an old standby and the honey might help with the dryness too. My former GP suggested dark chocolate for a cough remedy (yes, really) or hot chocolate. Don’t know if that was a prescription for the placebo effect, but it’s an excuse to indulge if that’s what you like. He also said cough medicines are a waste of time, and I go along with that.

I always like a good hot curry or something spicy, though hot spicy foods are always on some “do not eat” eat list, but spices have a lot of polyphenols — turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, paprika, cumin, add some chillies, if that’s your thing. I find it helps clear out the upper airways. I know it’s not for everyone, though

Get well soon!
