Will Vitamin D affect my Afib?

Hello everyone, I had a DXA scan this week and the GP has said I have osteoporosis in my lumbar spine, I was shocked, I have no knowledge of it but I asked her how severe and she said they don't give levels???? I have to take 800 IU Vitamin D3 and need to get weekly medication ( not sure what, was too shocked to quiz her) starting when I return from my trip away, approx 4 weeks time, just wondering if the D3 will affect calcium levels and in turn affect the Afib, I'm in such a muddle and having had a few episodes of Afib in past month I am very anxious, would appreciate your advice please, I take 100mg Flecainide X 2 and 2.5 mg Neblivilol daily..... Many thanks.

Taking the D3 helps the calcium to be better absorbed. I take 2000 IU/ day. I previously had osteopenia but the combination stopping all dairy intake and getting my calcium from other plant sources, and the increased vitamin D has all but normalized my bones.

Thank you SRMGrandma, I feel reassured now that taking the Vit D will not increase my Afib. I guess I need to learn more about osteoporosis, I was shocked today to be told I have it in my spine, I never expected that, osteopenia would have been a warning at least, good to know that you have managed to normalise your bones, many thanks again for your reply, all good wishes to you....

I also have osteopenia and was prescribed vitamin D3 about 3yrs ago. I've been taking it daily along with flecainide 100mgs daily and no problems with my AF. I've also been told after a subsequent scan that my bone density has not got any worse and maybe even improved slightly.

Thanks Angie, it is reassuring to hear that,I am glad that you are doing well. I wish I'd had my scan sooner but no one suggested it to me???, I requested one myself in the end!!!! Best wishes...

Thanks Jo I also had to request mine after my mum had a fall and broke several bones including her hip without knowing she had osteoporosis. 😀

I know Angie, it is very frustrating, we rely on the professionals and alas at times we are let down :( by some, thank goodness you were caught at the osteopenia stage. I am going to tell my daughter to have a scan asap she is in her 40s......thanks again.....

I have been on Adcal D3 capsules since 2010 when I broke my hip and had my first DXA scan. I had a second scan last year.

I have taken vit D ( prescribed by my doctor - here in France they take vit D deficiency more seriously) for 12 years . Despite far more sun available and a life spent in the garden I had a severe deficiency as I was not exposing enough skin when ouside . I have had no probems with it. Afib is a more recent visitor. Being deficient in vit D can lead to lots of health problems and it is essential to correct the deficiency. As we age our skin is much less efficient at making it from sun and wearing any sunscreen stops this. Also taking statins as vit D is made from cholesterol base. So supplementation is often the only answer.

Well I do take statins, I will take the Vit D from now on for sure, thank you Auriculaire and best wishes, hope the Afib isn't too troublesome for you....

Taking a statin could be one reason why you are low in vitamin D. You are also likely to need co enzyme Q10 as statins block the liver's manufacture of this too. My afib is not that bothersome. I have had 5 attacks in nearly 4 years . None has lasted longer than 12 hours and apart from the first when I was put on a drip in hospital I have reverted to NSR spontaneously. The real drag for me is having to be on an anticoagulant as I hate taking meds.

I am on a calcium channel blocker (diltiazem) so I cannot take calcium supplements but I am allowed to take D3 and take 1200 mg a day in the winter months and 600 mg a day during the warmer months, since I am outside much, much more often. Have not had any issues with D3 and my AF.
