I was prescribed Amiodarone in anticipation of a cardioversion which did not work and was then put on waiting list for an ablation. As there was little hope of getting the ablation in the foreseeable future it was then suggested that I go down the pace and ablate route to which I reluctantly agreed.
As it turned out I had my pacemaker implanted and that in itself improved my atrial fibrillation to the extent that the ablate has been cancelled.
I have stopped taking the Amiodarone and feel much better as it tended to be very debilitating and made me feel as though I couldn’t function properly.
Me too, I have stopped the Amiodarone it was making me feel so sick. I also have osteoporosis and have been told that taking this drug could make it worse.
That's great news you don't need an ablation now. I've never heard that expression before, pace and ablate. I live in France and I think all countries have their own way of doing things. I'm waiting to see an EP so I'll be back on the site to let you know what I've decided to do.
hi Trish we are all different. And honestly I have nothing good to say about amiodarone. They put me on it following my first ablation. My first dose was a large IV bag of that while still in the hospital after the ablation. Before I even left that day, I was covered with what looked like prickly heat rash from head to toe, and just miserable. I thought it might take a few days so I suffered through it. They wanted me on it about six months. I did tell my doctor how sick I felt, but I have a tendency to under play. I was actually curled up in a single position constantly nauseous with a pounding headache and body pain head to toe. I spent most of my time on the couch. Finally, I could take some more. My doctor told me to come I didn’t he was not happy that I had someone hidden how I felt. This was immediately following my first run in with afib and flutter. It seems like 1000 years ago. The doctor had me stop the medication immediately and within days I felt better. I can’t think at the moment what he put me on next, but it was great over a year. I did have a second ablation of her a year and a half total I had relief from afib. I have a very complex case it had a fib and a typical flutter.
long story short, I would not suggest amiodarone, but there are others on here that I’ve taken out a very long time. The very last one they were going to try me on was Tikosyn. I never got to be on it because my cardioversion failed terribly. A few months later I ended up with a pacemaker and AV node ablation. Best thing I ever did wish it had been done years sooner. Just now ablation and meds are temporary your body will get used to them. Don’t let them sell you on the fact that it’s a forever fix because there is no cure yet. I ended up in heart failure because of wasted time when I had been left in tachycardia around 150+ for about eight months until I found a new doctor. Your heart can only take so much, however be advised it can be turned around to some degree. Heart failure is not what it used to be. Also, I don’t know why they’re telling you about going off meds I will be on an anti-coagulation for the rest of my life. That’s fine with me and beats having a stroke. At this point, I am not only still on metropolol, but increased because my heart rate is still not where they want it to be. When I am active, they want it below 85 my waking etc. is fine and I am set at 60. Unless I am extremely stressed out for some thing that has me racing around my heart rate is great and I feel great. Your heart rate will go up when you’re doing things that’s normal
I don’t know what’s going on with you so I can advise you but don’t get talked into ablation after ablation cardioversion after cardioversion to be put in sinus rhythm. Most of them don’t last long. It was a great feeling 2 1/2 weeks. But oh, what a letdown when you certainly have a fib just come back out of nowhere. I’m being honest ask questions maybe you’re a lucky one. It won’t take much to put you in sinus rhythm and keep you there. My second cardioversion Christmas week of last year failed miserably. It took three paddles to get me back. It was not a good experience with several side effects afterwards. That is when we decided to go pacemaker. I know it was for me when my doctor gave me answers to questions I had not asked yet.
I wish you the best. I have not read about you. I have been off here quite a bit lately having back issues but thankfully have cardiac clearance now to get my surgery. When I moved to Houston, I was supposed to be getting it then, but then my ugly heart acted up and it has taken all this time.
I don’t know where you are if you are in the states, need a fabulous doctor reach out to me. He was a miracle to me. There was no pacemaker for me but my amazing Dr. devised one. I doubt. I would be here now if not for him because many pastors stick to the same old thing when you hit a certain age. I feel like they consider us disposable. My doctor continues to tell me I’m not going anywhere and he is here with me. I was the first one to have the procedure that I have. He was invited to Dallas to teach other EPs. Hopefully by now there are many of them within a better life like me again the first time.
Hi Hon thank you. Yes, I finally got clearance to get my back operated on. It was the cardiac clearance holding me up for two years.
Busy busy here with oyr feral colony. Trying to spay and neuter etc can be a full time job. Unfortunately, we also got litters of kittens. Not that I don’t love them but… sadly 8 newborns within two weeks of age passed away. They just were not ready to be here yet. It had been an unhealthy pregnancy although they looked beautiful each one just never woke up when they were taking a nap with their siblings.
I hope this finds you doing better. What is going on with you? Please keep in touch.
Thank you for that long reply. It was interesting reading your post. I have been on the site for a while but haven't had any episodes for such a long time.
I really hate the Amiodarone, it makes me feel so sick so I've stopped taking it. Your doctor sound incredible, I'm so happy to hear you have your personalised pacemaker ... just made for you. What a doctor ...
I live in France and hope to see and EP soon. I'll come back on here and let you know what I've decided to do.
