Anyone taking Anticoagulants for AF, together with Alendronic Acid for Osteoporosis?

I've got AF and taking Edoxaban. I'm also taking Atorvastatin, Ramipril, Bisoprolol and Levothyroxine.I've just been told that I have Osteoporosis, which is a side effect of taking Letrozole for 5 years for breast cancer. Alendronic Acid can help osteoporosis, together with taking calcium and vitamin D.

Is anyone else on here taking Atorvastatin and Alendronic Acid as I've read that taking both can interact with each other.

I'm taking Edoxaban, Alendronic Acid and Atavorstatin. Didn't want to take that, but the cardiologist said I should because of a problem. Its my 'good' cholesterol which is high. You just can't win! I wasn't aware there were any interaction issues will have to look it up.

Thanks for replying. Have you had any side effects from taking alendronic acid and do you take a tablet once a week?

Hi Lily, I take it once a week

I haven't noticed any side affects from the Alendronic Acid other than its a blooming nuisance as I can't have my cup of tea first 🙄 so I have my shower, wash and dry my hair, then the half hour has passed

Best wishes

Sheila

I took my first pill of this last Wednesday. Thursday my back was in so much pain I could hardly walk. It got better the next two days but I fully believe the pill set it off. I didn’t tweak anything in my back or anything else that would cause it that I know of. I looked up side effects and back pain is one of them. 🤷‍♀️

I took ibandronate bisphosphonate with Xarelto for 5 years (I am now having a 'holiday' to avoid osteonecrosis of the jaw, one of the possible side effects of long-term ingestion of bisphosphonates) for five years with no problems. This tablet brand name Boniva, only needs to be taken once a month with the usual restrictions of not lying down or eating, but on my last Dexa scan there was noticeable improvement.

How often do you have a dexa scan? My husband takes alendronic acid for osteoporosis (probably caused by taking acid reflux tablets for years which can affect absorption of calcium). He has been warned about osteonecrosis and has to have dental work done by the hospital for that reason. He hasn't had a scan since the first one over 5 years ago.

Well, I live in South Africa, and the recommendation here, is every two years, which I have had since I suffered a compression fracture of the spine 5 years ago.

Thank you! I'm in the uk and I think I'll get my husband to check with his GP whether he should be getting another dexa scan yet. They aren't that good at our surgery unless you ask things!

Hi Lily,

An interesting question that rang bells as an 80 yrs young, formally diagnosed permanent AF since 2020 but actually been ‘undiagnosed’ since 1982.

Now on Bisoprolol, Digoxin, Rivaroxaban, Acrete D3 + extra cholecalciferol (also calcium), Atorvastatin and now 70 mg Alendronic Acid once/week.

My dentist told me to shun the injected version because of tooth risk but said nothing about the pill version.

I tolerate them all fairly well (tiredness excepted) and am expecting/hoping for a cardioversion next year (please everyone be aware - you must be on anticoagulants for a full 30 days in case the shock releases a blood clot you didn’t know you had !!!).

Hope that helps, remembering that we’re all different, of course!
