Just watched the rugby match between New Zealand and Ireland.
My heart was absolutely pounding the whole game, right from the Haka. I had my PIP Flec and glass of water sitting ready in case I needed it. Thankfully my heart remained in NSR!
Adrenaline and emotions are triggers for ne.
What a game. Go the All Blacks

Me too - watching in Ireland so gutted. But that’s life!! Sympathy for sexton as he bows out. Heart stayed in NSR but short episode later last night. 😢
Hi all. I have persistent AF. The excitement was too much, raised my pulse too high. Had to skip through the game at *6 speed to get the final result. Phew. GO THE AB's.
Approx 2 years ago I flipped into AF at the movie theatre. The surround sound was really thumping, I could feel the low frequency sound waves going through me. My heart couldn't tolerate it. Loud music is a risk for me as well.
I was at David Gilmour's(Pink Floyd) concert in 2017 at the Royal Albert Hall. My heart was beating to the rhythm of the music. When we went to see the Rolling Stones a couple of years ago again the beat from the music affected me.
I am definitely sticking to read books and watch nature programmes on TV.😂
My daughter kept going to the bathroom during the match, she couldn't deal with the excitement. Lol. Probably her second match that she ever saw. Irish sad supporters here. I must admit my heart doesn't react to sport. Thank god. Well done to the All Blacks. Great game
Well, have you ever considered the game of Aussie Rules.
I was born in rugby league loving Sydney, NSW, and because of interstate rivalry, would never consider Aussie Rules, the game that ruled in Victoria (& SA, & WA). But I was wrong in my youthful bias. Many years later, after I actually watched games of Aussie Rules, there developed in me a begrudging conclusion that Aussie Rules was actually a much better game than both rugby league and rugby union. Go figure! 🤔
Highly recommended !!!!!
And what a team Australia could select if all our League, Union, & Aussie Rules players were playing a single code.
I am from the US, and I watched my first rugby game yesterday (Wales versus Argentina). Very interesting and exciting to watch. I am not familiar with the rules. I will read up on it and continue to watch. What was a little surprising is to see the contact with no protective equipment. Hockey and football have a lot of contact (some say collisions), but the players wear about twenty pounds of protective equipment.
Thanks for posting. As pottypete says this is a serious subject if you have vagally mediated PAF.
Sporting events, music concerts, visiting favourite holiday destinations or whatever else raises the emotions causing the Vagus Nerve to potentially tigger an episode.
When watching the rugby, I take breaks and make a conscious effort to relax. I ducked a Fleetwood Mac concert in London on my 60th as just couldn't trust myself. Got very close to starting an episode visiting a holiday destination where I had had one previously.
I think it is important to identify these potential trigger points and play safe. Yes it is a pain but I am happy to do it to stay AF free.
Thanks secondary. One of the main difficulties I have with AF is that I feel I have to become emotionally dead to reduce the risk of having an episode, which is totally against my nature. Both negative and positive emotions are a risk. Over the last couple of years I've definitely become a bit more chill. But I now avoid confrontation and arguments at all cost. Likewise I don't like to get too excited, which can be frustrating, and takes some of the enjoyment out of life.
Yes, I know what you mean and I have definitely made similar changes to moderate my emotions; looking at it positively that has not been all bad. Also on the positive side, in my earlier AF days I was initially concerned that moderating emotions might mean an end to intimate relations with my wife 🤭..... but this did not (in my case!) set off any episodes .
We are on the same page. When I said I have to moderate my emotions for exciting events, a classic example was earlier this year, my eldest daughter graduated from University. A very proud Dad moment for me, but the whole event, including graduation ceremony, watching them walk down the street in their regalia, very emotional day (in a good way), but I was constantly saying in my head to my heart to behave itself, which thankfully it did.I'm not letting this take away enjoyment in life.
All comments on this site confirm the fact that rugby is the most exciting game to watch, but if you got ‘off’ on the Wales game, how did you cope with the Fance/SA quarterfinal? Only 1 point between them so AB v SA for the best challenge to come - yes? Treat your SF as a measure of the excitement - pity we don’t have a score for that 😵💫
