anxiety/jitteriness on Xarelto

Took my first dose of Xarelto last night. This morning I feel super jittery & a little anxious. My hands are shaky and can't sit still. It's a similar feeling to having drunk too much coffee. (Also a little brain foggy)

Did anyone else get this side effect w/ Xarelto? If so, did it persist, or fade as your body got accustomed to the med?

I have taken Eliquis in the past and didn't have this effect on me.

Thanks!

I missed a dose of Edoxaban and the reason I realised there was a problem was later that day I got the most sky high anxiety . Awful. My brain reacted like this to stopping beta blockers, I seem to have a problem with anything that crosses the blood brain barrier . I don’t think it’s the anti coagulant active ingredient, but one of the “ fillers” in the tablet . You didn’t say if you have just swapped one drug straight onto the other, if so may be a withdrawal effect from the previous tablet. Some unfortunates like me are very sensitive

Xarelto is Rivaroxaban. I didn't have that reaction, and I haven't drank coffee for 16 years, as coffee, but not caffeine was definitely a trigger for me.The reaction I had was the effect of my body rejecting Rivaroxaban. It saw it as not the appropriate drug to be taking at that time. The result was an auto-immune condition, Polymyalgia Rheumatica. It started with pains throughout my body, except for my head, mimicking a known side effect of Rivaroxaban of muscle pains. I was taken off it after 12 days, but the damage had been done. After 3 years and 9 months of a very slowly reducing dose of prednisolone I was free of Polymyalgia Rheumatica.

I went back to Warfarin, buying an INR meter, so I can check my INR when I want, not limiting what veg I eat. Vegetables are the core of my diet, now eating at least seven a day, including green vegetables.

No negatives on Xarelto aside from the need to be careful when farming to keep gloved up and prevent bruises.

I have had no issues with the generic or brand name Xeralto. I have cut myself pretty badly since I’ve been on it (2 years) and a little slower to stop, but not a big deal…for me.

I'm known to some here as the natural therapy heart guy. I've had AFIB since diagnosed in 2014 (and probably a lot longer). I take only natural blood thinners and would never go back. The INR hassle plus side effects of Warfarin (literally rat poison, just reduced dose) caused me to look for alternatives. Xarelto - SIGN OF THE CROSS as used against vampires. No way Jose! I recently had a knee replacement June 16th, 2023 and they didn't want me to take virtually anything prior to the procedure.

So upon leaving they prescribed me Xarelto. I looked up all the potential side effects and the difficulty if one decides to get off the bugger and said this is not safe for me to take.

I'm back to taking my natural blood thinners, Nattokinase - my main one 1 2000IU per day, along with some Vitamin E and D3 and Turmeric, all mild blood thinners.

You talk of blood thinners. The anticoagulant I take does not thin my blood, but reduces coagulation. Do your natural "blood thinners" thin your blood, or do they reduce coagulation? Whichever, how do you measure the efficacy of them in preventing strokes?

As far as knowing if it thins my blood or not - I experimented with taking 2 Nattokinase each day, 1 every 12hrs, but when I'm cut, i bled for too long a time. 1 appears to be just fine for me.

Notes about Nattokinase:

Nattokinase may help prevent clot formation and reduce blood pressure. It has not been tested as a cancer treatment in humans. Nattokinase is an enzyme produced from nattō, a traditional Japanese food made from soybeans fermented with the bacterium, Bacillus subtilis.Apr 14, 2022

webmd.com/diet/health-benef...

excerpt - High natto consumption has been linked to the Japanese population’s longer average lifespans and lower chronic disease rates. In particular, studies show that people with diets rich in natto have lower rates of death from heart diseases.

Nattokinase has powerful effects on your health, including:

Lower Heart Disease Risk

Studies show that nattokinase dissolves blood clots — which helps maintain good blood vessel structure, improves blood flow, and lowers the risk of heart disease. It can also help lower your blood pressure, reducing strain on the heart that can lead to heart attacks.

Drug Interactions - Excessive bleeding can occur when you take nattokinase along with some medical drugs. Because nattokinase can dissolve blood clots, people taking blood thinner medication may be at a higher risk of bleeding.

Nattokinase: A Promising Alternative in Prevention and Treatment of Cardiovascular Diseases

Excerpt from second nig.gov link

In summary, compared with traditional antithrombotic and antihypertensive drugs, NK is characterised by high safety, low cost, simple production process, oral availability, and long in vivo half-life. As such, it is expected to become a new-generation drug for thrombotic disorders or CVDs. Although human trials and clinical studies demonstrate the clinical benefits of NK in the clinical settings, there remain a number of limitations. However, all the available data are encouraging and promising and further clinical trials are needed to fully examine the prospect of NK as an alternative medication to tPA, aspirin, warfarin, or newer anticoagulants in the management of CVD. In the near future, it is possible that patients with CVD may need only a single NK pill to replace multiple drugs administered for the prevention and management of CVD, including tPA, antihypertensives, statins, aspirin, and warfarin.

Excerpt from this one. Blood clots were experimentally induced in dogs. Oral consumption of nattokinase dissolved the blood clots and restored normal blood flow in only 5 hours [14].

Studies in human cells suggest that nattokinase [15, 1]:

Directly reduces fibrin clots 6 times more efficiently than plasmin

Increases activity of anti-clotting enzymes (urokinase, t-PA)

Reduces pro-clotting enzymes (PAI-1)

*** Drug Interactions

Nattokinase binds to heparin, a glycosaminoglycan used as an anticoagulant drug. Depending on the length of the heparin chain, nattokinase can interfere with heparin’s functions. It can also bind to other glycosaminoglycans [26].

Since nattokinase may cause blood thinning, it should not be paired with other blood thinning agents such as aspirin or warfarin. This can increase the risk of brain hemorrhage in patients who have small vessel disease [27].

There is also a risk of clotting mechanical heart valves if nattokinase is substituted for warfarin

I hope this helps everyone who is interested. There is so much more that Nattokinase does for the body. I've taken it since early 2015.

I appreciate this thread is 3 months old now but I've had a similar experience. I started taking Xarelto around two weeks ago due a DVT in the right arm. The side effects were minimal during the first few days (light dizziness and loose bowel movements) which soon passed. However, over the last week I have experienced exactly the same symptoms with all the classical signs of anxiety ( I've suffered with anxiety on and off for years). Unfortunately it appears to have triggered the fight of flight response and has a result I now have multiple symptoms. Having read a number of forums it would appear that anxiety is a commonly reported symptom. I have another two months on this drug and wondering now whether I should be thinking of changing. Did you symptoms settle down?
