Hi everyone

I have been on Xarelto for 6 months now, but this past 2weeks Iv been struggling with earache, went and see ENT Dr but it seems that all is in order, but the ears are painful, could this be a side effect? The pain is unbearable, whoever experienced the same let me know how go go about it,

Thanks in advance

Hello Thato and welcome to the forum. I am not medically trained but I have read the information sheet for Xarelto (Rivaroxaban in the U.K.) and I cannot see earache featured as a possible side effect. I know us AF’ers tend to associate every ailment with AF and our medication but we are, of course, susceptible to all kinds of non-related ailments. However, because you have been checked out by ENT and I assume ENT would have been able to identify a simple ear infection, I suggest you contact the manufacturers direct and ask them the question......please let us know the outcome......

Acute earache in adults not due to infection and with a normal ENT examination is usually referred pain from a tooth, the joint at the angle of the jaw, and from the neck, from what I understand.

At least, that might explain pain on one side. Not sure whether that could explain pain on both sides.

Either way an ENT consultant will be able to track down the cause. I'm presuming it was a junior ENT doctor that you saw.

I have been told that if one has severe earache when coming in to land, then one should get one's teeth checked. I just wonder if a visit to the dentist might solve something here too!

I take Eliquis which believe is very similar to Xarelto. About six months in, but also 2 months after ablations, and a few weeks after having the flu, I started having problems with one ear. Mine is not normally painful, but at times feel "pressurized" and a lot of tinnitus. Hearing tests show that there has been a significant loss in that ear only.

ENT theorized that possibly a very small blood clot had lodged in the ear as a result of the ablation....but both my Cardiologist and EP said they thought that was impossible.

Had an MRI of the ear and brain to check for other potential causes - none noted.

Now ENT is suggesting it may be Meniere's Disease, for which there is nothing/little that can be done, but hopefully it won't get worse.

So, I have no idea what caused this...Eliquis is a possibility, but there are a lot of others....in particular the onset shortly after having the flu.

I you are having significant pain, you might want to ask your ENT if an MRI would be in order. Apparently in rare cases there are benign tumors which can cause these types of problems with an ear, they show up on MRI, and can be surgically removed.
