I do keep asking but do not seem to have replies.

Has anyone had increasing JOINT pain since taking Xarelto/ Rivaraxoban ?

GP won't comment and cardiologist wrote saying " I am no expert" on the side effects of this drug.

I presume you have looked at the info. leaflet that comes with your med? Also, The manufacturer will have a website...and look up their tel. helpline number.

I double check all interactions like a maniac and check on line . Have been told this is the worse thing to do. I also have asked pharmacists but they tend to go vague about side effects.

I pick up new packet of Xarelto today will look at leaflet, different makers vary.

I have just looked and it lists limb pain as a possible side effect . Mine is specifically joint pain , so, not sure . It is a coincidence that two / three years ago , when I was changed from Warfarine to Xarelto , I was without joint pain and very very active and flexible. Now I ache in feet, one knee, back and sometimes wrist. I can not bear people putting it just down to " well at your age....."

NO! It is not 'just your age'When I hear this it puts me in a 'biffing' mood!!You prob. need a good MOT with specific attention made to you joints.Sorry I cannot be of more help.

Hi Lulu - I have been on Rivaroxaban for 4 years and have not had any increase in joint pain. No side effects at all.

Hi Lulu. I think it is possible that Rivaroxaban is affecting my joints/bones and have been trying to do a bit of research. Pre-Xarelto i had the beginnings of arthritis in my fingers and feet but no major problems. Now I have painful hips and one of my knees plus my back is very painful at times. My next step is to see my GP to discuss possible change to another anti coagulant to see if this improves. If I make any progress or get any answers I will update this thread. My last doctor was totally unhelpful but am with a new and I think better GP now.

Wow Tako, I will be SO interested to hear how you get on !!!!!

I am absolutely sure there is a link with drug and joint pain but feel such a "nuisance " daring to question the specialists . Bad enough having AF without being disdained.

Have you tried a different anticoagulant?

Luludean profile image
Luludean in reply toBuffafly

No Buffafly I haven't. I was put on Xarelto by my cardiologist at Papworth. The last time I saw him was 18 months ago. It is the longest time I have gone without being given an appointment.

I changed to Apixaban through my GP (for other reasons), she only asked if I had consulted a pharmacist! I had wondered whether taking an anticoagulant could affect my joints as I have been having problems, especially with my knees. I did look it up, unfortunately I can't remember where I found info, but I'll look again and post the link if I find it.

You could try stopping taking an anticoagulant but of course you know the possible outcome of that, which is probably why medics are unwilling to condone it.

Thank you Buffafly. I was on Warfarine for life so I certainly will not stop taking an anticoagulant .I just wish my cardiologist could be a little less dismissive, to try and see me as a person not just a heart problem. He was lovely when I saw him privately , I paid to see him so that I could get some sort of continuity , this went on for 5 years . I last saw him on the NHS , because there had been a mix up on my last private appointment , and, though I paid as I walked in the door, that had none of my notes! I think this caused the change in attitude.

Thank you Buffafly. I have just looked at the site you recommended . It is very interesting!!

So this health line has done the research on anticoagulants and confirms that they can cause joint pain ! I experience the type of pain they describe. It would be so interesting to find out which drug can cause this reaction ..I know full well that everyone has different reactions to drugs ! I am fine with Digoxin, many are not.

Yes it does, my husband used to take Xarelto and had some horrible episodes of joint pain, bed ridden for 2 weeks. They switched him to Elliquis & it never happened again.
