One of the difficulties in determining the effectiveness of beta blockers such as Bisoprolol is that the side effects are often difficult to distinguish from the symptoms of AF. Bisoprolol is commonly prescribed because it is often the only rate control medication a GP can prescribe unless an alternative is advised as a result of a referral to a specialist. If you are suggesting taking 1.25mg and 2.5mg on alternate days, this is only something a Doctor should sanction. If you experiencing difficulties with the medication, you should ask your GP for a referral to see a cardiologist or preferably an Electrophysiologist (EP) who is a cardiologist who specialises in arrhythmias. Currently in the UK, this is likely take several months so if it’s possible, consider a private consultation which will cost around £300.

Before doing this, if you are keen to pursue an alternative, ask your GP about alternative beta blockers such as Nebivolol or Calcium Channel Blockers such as Diltiazem and see what he/she has to say…….

Thank you for your message, we would recommend contacting your doctor regarding medication dosage. They are the only ones with access to your medical records and will confirm exactly the correct dosage for you. If you would like any further advice about managing symptoms or AF, please feel free to contact our patient services team: info@afa.org.uk

Sounds as though you need some helpful advice.

Maybe try the less formal route of pharmacist to get started, then GP.

My pharmacy lady always has time to talk to patients/customers and the GPs are good, once you can get through to them.

To date, the consultant route has been the least productive.

I'm on a protective dose of 10-mg Bisoprolol daily (5-mg twice a day) with no ill effects.

Hi. What range of heart rate are you getting on 2.5mg? Is it side effects that mean you can't tolerate 2.5 and 5mg?

It certainly sounds as if you need some professional advice to find the right dose, or maybe a change of drug if that doesn't work for you? We all seem to need very different doses.

1.25 is a low dose but highly effective in my case anyway. Many people on this forum have changed to nebivolol which is supposed to be very good.

Good luck

I was told that 1.25 mgs was too low for me as I’m overweight . I therefore am in 2.5 mgs .

I started off on 1.25 twice a day and couldn't tolerate it. The side effects of the bisoprolol were far worse than the AF. I tried many different types of these, and a mixture too about 9 months in to my Af journey and none seemed to work well so in the end the Cardio just put me on an anticoagulant - apixaban only which I have been on ever since, Only your Cardiologist or preferably your EP can prescribe the doses you should take and when.
