Hi,

I was prescribed it ( 10mg) for arthritic pain but it was not suitable. It gave me quite bad bouts of diahorrea. So, bad, absolutely no choice but to come off it. At the time I was on Bisoprolol (5mg) and Warfarin my anticoagulant. (I'm still on those drugs).

Interesting that your meds are also Bisoprolol and an anticoagulant.

Thanks for your reply I’m not a fan of taking a lot of tablets Obviously I’m taking Bisopolol and Apixaban religiously I suppose I’ll just have to try and see how I tolerate it Many thanks Take care

I take bisoprolol, candesartan, and apixaban and also 10 mg of amitriptyline. Helps me sleep well. It can take a awhile to get used to it. Take at 8 pm so effects wear off by the time you need to get up in the morning. I don't have any problems with my AF in the day it was always at night time. Now I mostly get a good night's sleep.

i had to take it because of nerve pain but i was advised to ask cardiologist before doing that because it can affect arrhythmia and make it worse. My dose was 8 drops and cardiologist said it was ok because low dose.

Thanks for your replying I am a bit concerned taking it. I think I will try a phone call to my AF nurse Take care

Hi, I had a knee replacement 5 weeks ago, and developed back and buttock pain immediately afterwards, that keeps me awake for hours at night. I've spent at least half the night in a chair every night since. I was prescribed amitriptyline 10mg yesterday for nerve pain, as other painkillers weren't helping.

I hesitated about taking the amitriptyline, having read about the possible heart rhythm effects, but am so desperate to get some sleep and pain relief that I decided to risk it. I'm hoping that the 10mg dose is small enough not to cause a heart problem. After just one tablet last night, my pulse is still regular.

Have you started taking it?

I also came across a study which found that although there's an increased risk of AF in the first month of taking antidepressants (which would include amitriptyline), there's an even higher risk in the month before starting the drug, and they suggest "the indication for antidepressant use rather than antidepressant use, itself, may be the risk factor for AF", and observe that after the 1st month on treatment, people become less likely to get AF. The dose for depression is much higher than the dose for pain. This is the study:- "Antidepressants and Atrial Fibrillation: The Importance of Resourceful Statistical Approaches to Address Confounding by Indication" pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/306...

Do let us know what you decide and how you get on.

I’ve taken it before for neck pain, but that was before I was diagnosed with Af. After thinking about it I think the Af was the reason I was taken off it. Will have a word with the nurse Thanks again

I had it 8 years ago for sciatica that lasted 6 months, but that was well before I got AF. My heart seems to have stayed very steady today, but I shall keep an eye on it.

Good idea to talk to the nurse.

I have felt quite zonked out today after my night's drugged sleep - if it regularly has that effect I might take itjust occasionally to catch up on sleep, rather than every day.

This does wear off as you get more used to it. Take it early evening 8 ish so has more time to wear off. My doc was ok with it.

I noticed a few ectopics after taking it on 2 successive nights - so have gone back to taking it every 2-3 days for the time being. It seems to be helping me sleep better even on the nights in between when I haven't taken it. Perhaps the effects take time to wear off?

I need something today I’ve got really bad pain They prescribed Cocodamol but I can’t tolerate them for many days. Because of the Apixaban they can’t give anything else It’s a nightmare and the fact you can’t speak to anyone. Better luck tomorrow Take care and thanks for listening

I was prescribed 30mg Amatriptyline for PHN (post herpetic neuralgia) pain following shingles in January 2019. I may have been on Bisoprolol at that time, I can’t remember as I have had many changes of meds in the meantime. My Cardiac GP at the time was not happy about it but said OK as it was a low dose. I found it did not really help with the pain but it did help me to sleep which, as a lifelong insomniac, was done kind of miracle! However, I weaned myself off it earlier this year as I felt it was losing its effectiveness. I have been in permanent AF now with HF for some years so I don’t really notice the AF any more. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Presumably you would take the lowest dose 10mg, you could try 1/2 a tablet to start.

I was prescribed it by a Trainee (!) doctor at my local surgery for a trapped Femoral Nerve to give me pain relief and allow me to get some sleep. No mention of risk of triggering my PAF although heart rate disturbance was listed as a potential side effect in medication information notes. Sure enough, within a few days my PAF came on. Stopped taking it straightaway (although it should be withdrawn gradually after long term use). I assume it took a while to get flushed out of my system until eventually I returned to normal HR.

That's really interesting.

I did read that this drug can affect the heart but was told that in small doses it was safe.

I was given it once for neck disc trouble but it made me feel quite zombie like so I stopped talking it.

A friend takes it daily for pain relief.
