Tachycardia- update

thank you all for the advice it really helped as I was getting a bit panicked about the high heart rate and not sure what to do. I haven’t taken myself to A&E yet! I took a Kardia ecg this morning and sent it to the hospital - came up as unclassified- just had a call back to say it is A-flutter- I am already down for an ablation - they have increased Bisoprolol to 5mg and I should contact them if it doesn’t settle down. If it persists they will bring forward the ablation- something I’m dreading. Currently still averaging 110bpm.

I expect I will be back on the forum when I get a date for the ablation!!

Thanks - Liz

I will signpost our fact sheets on preparing for and recovering from ablation which you will find useful.

110 is not really high. In fact last time I was in hospital they discharged me when it got to 110.

Good luck with the ablation we are all rooting for you

Glad things seem contained. I assume you have already sent the flutter ekg to your ep? They will certainly want to know in advance to plan the ablation accordingly and may even want to intervene sooner with medications or cardioversion.

I'm surprised they were so sure it was atrial flutter as when I had that I was told even a 12-lead ECG can be unreliable showing that. I had an ablation in 2019 for it and it has stopped it well although AF itself has arisen since, sadly. The AFl procedure is far quicker and safer than the AF one as it's in the right atrium, so there's no need to puncture the heart's septum or go near the pulmonary veins.

Also, with AFl, the heart rate is always a fixed step-wise ratio of the atrial flutter rate, which is around 300, so you tend to get a pulse that steps up from one to another, mine was 105 > 155 mostly, back then.
