NSAID's (like Ibuprofen) with Apixaban

Hi

I have been on Apixaban for some years, following Persistent AF, now resolved after an ablation in 2020.

Like all senior citizens I get bouts of muscle pain.

Ibuprofen is not recommended because of the risk of intestinal bleeding, though I have taken it for short periods and it works really well.

Are there any Anti Inflammatory drugs that you can take safely with Apixaban ?

All NSAID s promote arrhythmias which is why they are contraindicated. I find that cocodamol helps me or simply paracetamol

Thanks for the information. My consultant was only concerned about intestinal bleeding. Naproxen seems to have the best reputation but not sure it's available off prescription. Unfortunately I do not find paracetamol very effective.

Naproxen is certainly effective but still a NSAID. My husband was prescribed this and after about 7 days went into AF ....for the first time as far as we know....and is now in permanent AF albeit asymptomatic.

Ps....I find Cocodamol very good

I gather not as all of them can cause micro bleeding, I gather they all work similarly. I have read that codeine is safer as it works completely differently, but it comes with its own risks. there are other medicines such as SSRI drugs, amitriptyline and pregabalin that are given but a recent study has suggested these do little.

I have read that exercise is the best way to reduce arthritic and muscular pain. There's plenty about this on various internet health sites. For my neck troubles, time seems to be the best healer, but I do take an occasional diazepam to help with muscle spasm, and that seems to help.

Have you tried a physical therapy stretching program, Yachtsman ? A physical therapist can advise on proper stretches to help alleviate some of the discomfort.

Certainly not the "one all, cure all" but may help to become less dependent on drugs.

Many thanks for the replies. I have had a few physio sessions for a dodgy back, but the exercises were unfortunately to no avail. My GP prefers I stick with Paracetamol, which does help a wee bit.

I was recently in the hospital and they were giving me pain medication as well as Tylenol, which usually doesn’t help me but was helping more. Turns out they were giving me 1000mg, which was only allowed every 8 hours, but definitely made a difference at the higher dose and is continuing to help while I’m home awaiting surgery. You might want to ask your doctor about taking at that dose. Good luck.

Hello, Tylenol is safe for pain relief for us that have afib and on an anticoagulant per ER Drs. and EPs. I take it when needed for severe pain, just pay attention not to take more than recommended dosage by manufacturer.

I had Oxy-Norm for pain after op with Paracetamol 1,000mg. Brought down these a.s.a.p.

Within 2 days off former and latter by 7 days.

Eat a diet of anti-inflammatory foods like Vit A orange foods, kumara, pumpkin, capsium. Vit C also.

Did your muscle ache increase when you went on apixaban as it can be a side effect of that drug. My arthritis is certainly more painful after being moved from warfarin to apixaban. Best remedies I find are ice bandages on aching area

Hi,Thanks, my muscle aches appear entirely unrelated to Apixaban. I am now on Amlodipine for BP control and this also can cause muscle aches. Unfortunately this is a common side effect of all calcium blockers.

Paracetamol helps a bit when the pain gets to be annoying.
