Supplements for arthritis and rivaoxaban

Hi all

My husband has paroxysmal AF and a pacemaker takes digoxin and Rivaoxaban.

He has slight arthritis in both knees(too much playing hockey in his younger days!) and not bad enough to take painkillers all the time. Bothers him the most after sitting for a while and then moving again.

Before his AF was diagnosed he was taking turmeric and cod liver oil capsules but I read somewhere that turmeric thins the blood so not to take it with an anticoagulant so he stopped both. But they were helping so do any of you lovely people take anything that’s ok to mix in?

Haven’t tried him on glucosamine yet

Thank you!

Good Morning - whilst there is no direct advice based on evidence about many supplements however personally, I would not be taking Tumeric + fish oils with anticoagulants as both have the potential to increase the affect of the anticoagulant, making bleeds more likely.

I would never take Tumeric capsules as that is a very concentrated form, however, I frequently add either fresh, grated Tumeric or dried powdered Tumeric to cooking.

Add Tumeric to foods and try using topical Arnica gel as when required and take solvable paracetamol, I find that good enough to ease discomfort.

The advice is ‘Talk to your Doctor’ well that’s not always helpful so I find the Pharmacist far more knowledgeable and helpful usually - see this link to show to your husband

drugs.com/drug-interactions...

Same advice applies to Fish oil with anticoagulants so combination of all 3. ???

Hope that helps.

morning! Yes I stopped the turmeric as soon as he stated on the Rivaoxaban. Arnica sounds a good idea thanks!

I have AF, my knees were damaged in an accident almost seventy years ago, I was a runner / cyclist / gym bunny, I have AF, I've had a stroke, I take Pradaxa, and, I'm a volunteer in a nature reserve with a bill hook and commercial hedge cutter. My supplements include, glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM, tumeric and fish oil. At least a decade ago, an orthopedic surgeon told me that I would need knee replacement in seven years - I have the same knees as I did then. In theory, cuts should be a problem and COVID injections / blood samples should produce a bruise. Neither happen, but that's just me.

Hi thanks for the reply. Well it’s certainly seems working for your knees! Funny enough my husband doesn’t bleed any more than he did before if he cuts himself. I bleed more than him and I’m not on ‘thinners’. No bruises from jabs or blood tests either. He does sometimes get those purple bruise like marks that come out of nowhere but that’s it. 👍

I used to play hockey which has resulted in mild knee arthritis as well. I'm on warfarin. I tried turmeric but it gave me blood-shot eyes so I treated that as a warning and stopped it. I just make sure I have a good diet with lots of veg and fish. I also do knee exercises every day - squats, cycling, aerobics, etc. I can walk a good distance and climb mountains though I can only run a short distance. I think that keeping the muscles in order is the best thing for knees, and my physio agrees.

ah another hockey player! He was in goal. In the days with not much protective gear either 😩. He’s started seeing a chiropractor last week as he also has arthritis in his spine which affects his neck which can result in dizzy spells. He has a long list of posture defects to work on! So hopefully like you say that’ll help. Thanks for replying!

I rub arnica gel into my knees. I had a partial replacement on left in 2019, very successful. Privately, titanium implant.

I think I might try Arnica for him thanks! My friend is waiting for partial knee replacement on both knees. NHS tho 🫤 she takes painkillers all the time but just had hyluronic jabs in both. But she’s waited 3 years to get to that. She’s early 50’s so they put her at the bottom of the list

Don’t understand why she’s waited so long. There’s a woman I know, she hasn’t waited long at all in comparison. I made a mistake letting them give me a steroid jab in mine, didn’t work and I had to wait 3 months after it to be able to get the op! You can look round to different NHS areas. It affects the other knee too as all the weight is placed on it😢

Hi, I have chronic arthritis in most of my body and walking I can only do with knee and ankles strapped. Pain generally bearable but I find ice bandages for knees helpful. Worst problem is most of pain is at night so usually need prescription pain killers to sleep. My understanding is there is no evidence that glucosamine works. How do you tell. Unless you have tests and monitoring before you start and then after a month. I tried it for a month and found it bothered my stomach, noticed no difference to arthritis.

I would say try it and see, give it a couple of months. There’s also no evidence it doesn’t!! Have you tried Epsom salts in the bath? You’d need a good 2 cups. We get ours from Amazon. I’m a Neodynium magnetic therapist and have had good results with magnetic appliances, but they HAVE to be Neodyniums and very high Gauss rating.

I like Epsom salts! I get mine in home bargains but yes that’s a good idea. Don’t think he can have any magnetic devices due to his pacemaker. But that sounds interesting

Ah, yes, that might be a contra indication. Well, I doubt if you were using on a knee it’d be strong enough to reach the pacemaker, but just a consideration.

I’ve used my powerful wand in my heart hoping it’d convert me back into rhythm, not yet 🙄

oh that sounds hard for you. Arthritis is an awful thing. My friend is on a waiting list for partial knee replacement. She’s just had hyluronic injections in both knees says it’s made a bit of difference. My sons dog is on yumove (obviously for dogs 😀) and I’m not sure what’s in it. He has arthritis one one front leg. He’s now running around like a bull in a china shop! Take care

Hello janau, I too have bad knees, (no cartilage) and have had the cortisone shots, the hyaluronic acid shots and radio frequency ablation on both knees and the latter seems to work the best but it doesn't last very long for me but it does take the pain away so I can at least get a good night's sleep and walk with not much pain at all. It is virtually painless, awake the entire procedure and up walking right after it is done. You might want to check it out. The Drs. say it should last for about a year in most people. Have a Great Day

I spoke to someone once who never ate greens because of the vitamin K and anticoagulantion. However, if she had eaten her greens to get the benefit it gives, INR testing would have adjusted her warfrin to account for it. Likewise with your turmeric etc.I find, (with AF), having a stable diet, quantity and type of food, stable body weight and exercise, reduces the possible swings in INR results. Hope this helps.
