Long train trip ahead

Hello Everybody...esp folks who may remember me (BobD, JeanJeannie and C Dreamer)

I have a special "birthday" in July this year and we are going to Switzerland by train and to travel on the Glacier Express.

Just wondering if anyone else has done anything like this and worn those compression stocking things while travelling? I HAVE contacted my cardiologists secretary to ask this question, but she hasn't got back to me as yet!

I know July is a while away, but we are also going to the Dordogne in 2 weeks time...also by train.

I am in permanent AF and take Edoxaban as my anti coagulant.

Any thoughts, folks? Cheers!

The compression stockings should be ok whilst travelling and I hope you’ll have a wonderful time. Happy birthday too when it gets here.

We love the Isle of Wight.

You will only need the compression socks for flying .I always used then for any length of flight journey over two hours. I kept them on for 24 hours when i flew to India.I always put them on at home and not in a hurry in the airport!

Hello Lin.Have a great trip for your birthday.I have had it a bit rough recently with health but it is looking better now....and folks here have been so very helpful.

Hi good to hear from you again.

I have to be honest and say that I wouldn't even have thought about wearing compression stockings. Instead I'd be moving my feet and legs to keep the blood circulating and standing up when and if I could. Are you taking an anticoagulant?

Thank you. Yes, I take edoxaban. It was just that a friend put the suggestion into my head (you know what it's like!!) although she had flown to Antigua!!

Hope you are keeping well.

Hydration seems very important as mentioned by a few! Not sure how easy that will be..bottles of bought water I guess?

Sorry we never got to see you on our last Devon visit. We couldn't quite get that far North, that time.....but plans to visit again.......possibly to Winsmoor area...for our wedding anniversary next April. we also have new friends near Tiverton!

`I think you are wise to wear the compression stockings - not the most comfortable of things and still walk around as much as possible and when sitting ‘pump’ your legs. Have a fabulous time and Happy Birthday

Not until July...but thanks!

This sounds heaps of fun, having done an overnight 2 day train trip in Europe a few years ago I envy you (I'm about to look up the train you mentioned) . I also think that support hose is really recommended for plane travel. On a train you can get up and walk around, and you're not strapped into your tiny seat for 12 hours.

Wightbaby profile image
Wightbaby in reply to Omniscient1

You don't sleep on the train, but have a base hotel where you go out from. Its the journey down that is the longest.

We are going with Rail Discoveries, if you wnat to research it.

Thx, will do :-)

Yes I've been on several. One all around Austria on a train/ coach trip. Went on lots of little trains once there, then on long trip through Italy to Sicily.

Regular stops,or it's easy on a train to stretch your legs now and then. I did not feel the need at all to wear compression stockings. I might on a long haul plane trip due to altitude and less possible wandering about.

Glacial Express trip is on our list!

Off to the Italian Dolomites in September ' steam trains of the Dolomites '

Enjoy your trip.

Stay hydrated.

Hi

Steam train. OH I'm jealous.

Any steam train ride so great. I was brought up in Wellington, NZs top steam train journeys. From Tawa - Wellington every month. Heaps of tunnels!

Then later electrified! Boo Hoo.

I guess they would be banned in our pollution free, environment world!

One of the advantages of train is it is much easier to move about, so take advantage every 1-2hrs.

I got a DVT in my leg 20 yrs ago after a 5hr car journey without a break (not recommended) and for some time used the Sigvaris elasticated stockings made in France; good make, make sure you get the right size, tough to put on until you get the technique but work a treat. However now I only use it when my leg aches or I know I am going to be standing up for a long time. I doubt you will need them but take them along anyway. Have a good one!!

You might find the compression stockings a bit hot in July! Especially if this July is anything like last year.

I scheduled my second hip op for late Sept in 2021 because I could not bear the prospect of wearing the compression stockings in the heat in summer - we live very close to the Dordogne and the heat is more humid than in the south of France. Even so they were a misery and I did not wear them as much as I should have done. It will be a bit cooler in the mountains - we go to the Auvergne on hols in summer as it's cooler but it will still be hot in July. If you like gourmet cooking try La Treille at Vitrac Porte in Dordogne. It is near the scenic villages of la Roc Gageac and Beynac et Cazenac.

personally I’d let my legs be free, it will be hot in July and you csn walk around on train it’s not like being stuck in a plane seat. Actually I also think you will find the Dordogne will be getting a hot spell too in two weeks time, I’m off to Provence and all along mid to south france is getting a hot spell…up to 27, we currently have had rain rain, I’m alps, so compression stockings a hot weather spell discomfort…well that’s my take on it! But have a wonderful time and enjoy the weather!

Thanks for that info , Sue. We know Morzine, as this was the place we stayed during our first trip to France, many years ago. In fact, my birthday treat was originally to stay in Morzine for the 2 race stages of Le Tour in July, (big cycling fan!!), but we decided it would be too chaotic and busy, and just too much organisation, which would have to be done by me!

So we opted for Glacier Express instead. The Dordogne trip around 10th May is with Rail Discoveries. looking forward to some warmer and hopefully drier weather!

Morzine profile image
Morzine in reply to Wightbaby

ah the tour! It gets manically busy!and they go by in a flash!

Yes warmer a drier…it’s pretty soggy here right now my chalet is in the cloud. Have a great rail trip it’s sounds perfect I think I will check thrm out!

Auriculaire profile image

Well it certainly needs to warm up. We are not far from Dordogne and Sat it poured all day and yesterday there was a nasty east wind. The three days before it was lovely . Too changeable by far!

Morzine profile image
Morzine in reply to Auriculaire

yes indeed! Wednesday 24 and summer ! Since thrn it’s rained….it’s like November here in the mountains ….

Auriculaire profile image
Auriculaire in reply to Morzine

Well they keep telling us that we are suffering from drought this early in the year. Apart from a very dry warm Feb it's been a fairly rainy winter and Spring here.

Morzine profile image
Morzine in reply to Auriculaire

ha ha yes drought measures….we r completely soggy wet in the alps!

Auriculaire profile image
Auriculaire in reply to Morzine

Well you are obviously hogging all that water as I'm sure I read in La Montagne last week that Alpes maritimes was one of the departments where you could no longer fill up your pool.

Morzine profile image
Morzine in reply to Auriculaire

that’s south yes drought measures…I’m high up near the Swiss boarder soggy and very green and damp!wake up to living in clouds it snowed this morning….have you seen Spain will be forty this weekend, …maybe it will breeze upwards…..

Happy Birthday and have great hols. I would wear the stockings for flying but not for the train as they are uncomfortable. However I would keep moving around instead. X

Wightbaby profile image
Wightbaby in reply to dedeottie

hello deodottie. Yes thanks. Opinio seems to be that you can move around more on a train...nice walks to buffet car and back!! So i will go a little more often! Not for wine though as i am unable to drink alcohol. Don't you just love AF!!

lovetogarden profile image
lovetogarden

I wear them on plane trips. Hadn’t thought about long train rides though. I suppose it makes sense for any type of journey where you’ll be sitting for a long time. Have a wonderful trip!

JOY2THEWORLD49 profile image

Hi

Train, bus, car any long tris will help blood circulation if you wear those stockings. And get up and walk, tap feet take a stool for your feet.

Also at night put up your feet.

You will be good.

Take out Travel Insurance and declare AF.

cheri JOY

Waving from the past! Compression socks sound like a sensible idea. Take care, have huge amounts of fun and tell us all about it when you get back!

Oh hello!! That is so strange....I looked through my personal messages yesterday and there you were, (probably about 5 years ago!!) and i honestly thought about you, and wondered if you were still posting on here.

Dordogne trip in May and Glacier Express at end of June. Both departing fom St Pancras

Hope you are keeping well

in reply to Wightbaby

It all sounds fabulous! I am doing well thank you, I haven't had any AF for nearly two years (touch wood!). So I have been a bit quiet. It's lovely to hear you're going on such a fabulous trip - I hope you're keeping well too.
