Techniques to stop A fib naturally

I read an article as I was in A fib and trying to research ways to get back into sinus rhythm. It was suggested that I close my mouth and hold my nose and try to blow as hard as possible. I tried it and it worked for me after one attempt. I'll try it again next time I'm in A fib, but thought I'd put in on here in case others want to see if it might work for them. It's quite possible that it had nothing to do with anything, but don't think it could do any harm.

Good to hear.

That is known as the Valsalva Manoeuvre and is a very popular method for getting back into rhythm. Doctors or paramedics often ask you to try it to get you back into normal sinus rhythm, there are a few variations

If vasalva works then fine. For many it won't but always worth trying

it has never worked for me.

Yes, one variation is the modified Valsalva maneuver that works better for more organized supraventricular tachyarrhythmias than for AFib; however, occasionally I have been able to self-convert out of AFib with it:

During the “strain phase” (A.) you sit as you did, close your mouth, hold your nose and try to blow as hard as possible for approximately 15 seconds. During the “relaxation phase” (B.) you immediately lie down supine, but with your legs being manually elevated.

Yes, the paramedics have told me to do this on several visits. Never worked for my Afib but did for atrial tachycardia for me. But it must be safe if they use it.

Hi joyelane

I too did a similar thing the last time ( blowing through the end of a syringe) I had an episode and it worked for me as well. It was a few months ago now but I’m hoping it might work again next time. I also lay on the floor with my legs up against the sofa for 30 seconds and lay them down slowly. I’m not sure if that helped either at all, but I’d probably do that again as well.

I’m glad it worked for you 😊

So lucky it has . I’ve been in A Fib since the early hours of yesterday, tried various things to no avail 🥲

I just tried it and almost passed out and my HR went up to 143 but immediately dropped back down to 107. Guess it's not for me but thank you for sharing.
