A fib and asthma Inhalers

Hi everyone, I have paroxysmal a fib and also asthma. I have been on a steroid inhaler for along time ( Flovent HFA ). Recently I have had to resort to the generic Flovent because the manufacturer is no longer making it . I’ve noticed a big difference in my breathing, it’s not working as good as the brand. And I keep having an asthma exacerbation. I have an appt. with my pulmonologist tomorrow and I want to see if I can try something different to help my asthma. The inhalers that my insurance cover are Trelegy, Breo ,Advair and Incruse ellipta . I am not to familiar if theses inhalers will trigger my a fib. For thoses of you that have a fib and asthma have you found that you can use theses inhalers without having an issue with your a fib. I realize that everyone reacts differently to medications so it’s more of trying to see what works for you. I appreciate any suggestions or thoughts concerning this. Thank you.

Unfortunately, although I have asthma and use an inhaler (combined preventer and reliever) I don’t recognise any of those names as I’m in the UK. Perhaps try the Asthma forum?

Hi Buffafly , thank you for taking the time to respond . If you don’t mind me asking what is the name of your inhaler with the combined preventer, or the ingredients in the inhaler then I can look it up. Am in the US. Thank you !

Best ,

Jances

Hi Jances, it is a combination of budesonide and formoterol called Duoresp Spiromax. The branded name is Symbicort but mine is made by Teva. It can work as both a preventer and a reliever. I only have moderate asthma and since I’ve used it every day I’ve had very few respiratory issues of any sort so it’s been a life changer for me.

Best wishes x

I'm in the US. I don't have asthma, but a couple years ago my GP gave me a steroid shot for seasonal allergies and a prescription for Advair. I don't know between the two meds which it was that caused one of the worst a-fib episodes I've ever had. It took the ER staff hours to bring my heart rate down to my "normal" a-fib levels, then finally back to NSR. If you're unsure about Advair, then please use with caution. I guess I'll never know which of the two meds caused my horrible experience.

I use Symbicort and have not had any problems with it.

My understanding after speaking with my cardiologist is that it's the relievers that can cause problems for AF because they often contain adrenaline. However the preventer should be ok ... and if you have the right dose of preventer you can hopefully avoid using the reliever ..

I use Beklu preventer in UK
