Good morning Kingclart, this is something that will need to be discussed with your doctor, as to whether you need to stop your medication, and if so the timings of this. It is an individual assessment based on your personal medical history and needs around the procedure. Please feel free to contact our patient services team should you have any further questions or would like further support or advice: 01789 867 502 email: info@afa.org.uk

What has the department told you ?

DOACs have a very short half life so in the worst case the day before but many procedures do not require anticoagulation to be stopped.

We can't advise on such matters and you must check with the endoscopy people.

You should get a pre-procedure appointment with a nurse - these days it is most likely to be by phone when they ask you what medication you are on and they should tell you at that time- though I found she had to call me back about it in the first instance as she needed to talk to the consultant. They will also prescribe the prep at that time which you will be able to collect from your GP - if you are not having a face to face with the nurse. For the second colonoscopy where they removed polyps I was told at the time the appointment was made - which was just after the first one. If you are not having any type of pre procedure appointment then I would call the hospital and speak to your consultant's secretary about this. Some times they ask you to stop 3 days before sometimes 24 hours it all depends on what they intend to do at the colonoscopy and the procedures done by the team and hospital in general. I had samples taken at the first one and a second one to remove polyps so they asked me to stop both times the first for 24 hours the second for 3 days.

I agree with Katrina - only your doctors can advise you about this. I can tell you about my colonoscopy in December. I have paroxysmal afib tho am in good shape after an ablation 10 months ago. I was told to stop edoxaban 36 hours before the colonoscopy which I did. When I arrived at the hospital the consultant said that he would to the colonoscopy but if he needed to do anything therapeutic-eg polyp removal or a biopsy - I would have to stop edoxaban for several days and come back for the procedure. Happily all was well and I didn’t have to.

I recently read three days, but you will be advised individually in the notes the clinic sends. If they haven't, I would phone them and ask as different centres perhaps have different ideas. Also, if you are likely to be in AF at the time, they need to know this, too.

You have already received great advice to follow.

I would only add that when I was whinging about having to take Edoxaban to my Cardiologist, and concerned about bleeding risks, he told me that it is much reduced in the system after 24 hours and you are clear for major surgery after 3 days.

I have always been told to stop for 4 days prior. Best ring GP for advice.

I would call your doctor’s office they should give you a sheet with everything you need to know before procedure. They do vary also depending on what’s been done. I just got my sheet today for the insert of my pacemaker. I need to be off my blood thinner three days. The last thing I had done it was just one day so I would really check for your medical opinion if they did not tell you already.
