Quick Question

I’m normally fairly good at remembering to take my Rivaroxiban with my evening meal . However sometimes I forget, so how long after eating a full meal is it ok to take the tablet. Is a hour ok or if you have a slice of toast and butter does this top up your stomach an hour or two after so you can take the tablet. What do you all do I’m sure you must forget sometimes. What helps you remember.

Best wishes

Stuart

Although most members are not medically trained and are therefore not qualified to offer specific advice on medication, that doesn’t prevent anyone from expressing opinions based on their own experience. However, as there is no means of knowing anything about anyone offering advice, so it’s best to be cautious. I take Apixaban and I keep my evening dose in a small plastic pot next to my armchair. The alarm goes on my iPad and iPhone religiously at 19.55 so I turn them off and occasionally still manage to forget to take the blooming tablet 😩.

I don’t know the answer to your question but I do know that a full, substantial meal is important because Rivaroxaban needs the fat content to enable the medication to do its stuff. Pharmacist’s are a great source of information but for obvious reasons, they tend to stick to the information provided by the manufacturers. Why not try and get into the habit of putting the tablet and a glass of water in a prominent place on the table and hope for a good result!

There is a pinned post on "what to do if you forget to take etc. " which I put up three years ago, copied from Thrombosis UK. To save you looking it up take it as soon as you remember so long as it isn't too close to your next dose.

I take my riveroxaban regularly with an afternoon or evening meal and rarely forget. However, on those rare occasions, I take it with several spoons of peanut butter!

I take the view that for a meal to be digested takes around 3 hours or so. If I eat at 7 I don’t tend to go to bed until 10/10.30 to avoid waking up with AF. I usually take my Rivaroxaban straight after eating but I’m sure an hour or so later would be fine.

If we go out for a meal or round to family I take my tablet when I get home so that could be 9pm.

That’s just me of course and I’m not medically qualified. I rarely forget my tablet because I have the box next to me whilst eating but being out of the house can throw me. I now have to make sure my husband takes his Rivaroxaban too as he was diagnosed with AF a week ago.

I think a big scoop of yoghurt or ice cream or similar taken with it would be enough if you forget.

If we're talking about a once in awhile, I would just take it as soon as you remember and not give it a second thought. If you add some peanut butter or something else with fat, that would be a bonus. But do heed FlapJack's previous advice and never solely rely on anything you read here, even if multiple people say the same thing, because there are just too many false mantra's floating around these forums. So double check with your doctor or pharmacist and/or reputable literature.

I would pick up the phone and call my pharmacist or check with the doctors office. Our meds here come with instructions giving you directions what to do if you forget. For the most part, it seems up until 12 hours. You can take them but for specifics, check with MEDICAL.

When I spoke to my GP about this she said that milk and biscuits would be fine. If I forget to take mine then this is what I do.
