IBS and Rivaroxaban

For any other IBS patients who've been prescribed Rivaroxaban. My IBS became more severe than ever after being prescribed various meds for AF. All the standard cardiac meds have gastric side effects, but I discovered quite by accident that taking Rivaroxaban at night reduces an adverse reaction in the morning. I used to take all my meds at breakfast time, but I now leave the Rivaroxaban until a few hours after my evening meal.I hope this may give you some hope - I was on the point of giving up Rivaroxaban as it was ruining my life.

Hi, it affected my IBS as well which was one of the reasons I changed to Apixaban (Elequis). You have to take it twice a day but it is much easier on the digestive system and there are no food restrictions - Rivaroxaban is most effective when taken with a meal containing fat which is unsuitable for someone who may not feel like eating that if their digestive system is unhappy. I also have diverticular disease and it’s even worse for that!

Rivaroxaban MUST be taken with a full meal preferably containing fat. Without this, absorbtion may be inadequate and protection greatly reduced.

Much medical opinion would differ, but thank you.

NHS instructions are to take with a meal, preferably with water.

Well, it depends on what you mean by a meal. There are many on here who favour the Full English approach, especially concerning the need for fat. Many clinicians I have consulted disagree with them, including the anticoagulation nurse practitioner at my GP surgery. It's worth reading the more recent studies, (Wellcome Collection Archives Library, BMJ collection at the BL), before wholly accepting internet sources and risk an increase in cholesterol. But, we must all do what we think best, and trust whomever we think trustworthy.

Thank you, I'll ask about alternatives.

Take great care here since I was told that rivaroxaban, to be effective at reducing the increased risk of stroke that AF brings on, must be taken with food or on a full stomach.

I used to be on rivaroxaban, but it kept giving me urinary trct infections, so I was changed to apixaban. I did everything as advised eating with a full meal etc, but it didn’t help. Apixaban is fine

I have stress related IBS and didn't get on with Rivaroxaban and switched to Epixaban and didn't have the same issues. Also has the advantage of only having to take once a day.

Do you really mean Apixaban because that is twice a day? Edoxaban is once.

Hi

A hint...

Most of these drugs use acid to digest. I take PRADAXA twice day with fruits or Smoothie.

Taking it in the evening helped, not taking it at all helped further.
