Hip replacement

Hi everyone.

I am looking to hear from anyone with A Fib who has had a hip replacement operation. Did you have any problems, were there any concerns about doing the operation from the doctors?

Please let me know of your experience.

Thank you.

Hi - I have had 2 in the last 2 years and absolutely no problems. You are probably on a NOAC so your consultant will manage that for the periods before and after the op.

Thank you, good to hear of your success

I regularly look after post operative joint replacement patients. Don't worry, as David has already said they will manage your anticoagulants before and after, usually stopping 3-5 days before.

We regularly see patients with AF come through the procedures and recovery absolutely fine. There have been very few problems that I recall.

Thank you so much for replying. Your comments have certainly helped me. Pity you will not be there to look after me.

Not hip but knee. No problems at all. I was given a spinal anaesthetic and everything went according to plan. All the best for your hip replacement.

By the way, make sure you do all your physio exercises every day, as instructed.

Yes. The physio. is critical to restoring good mobility.

Thank you, I am hoping for the spinal. Is it better than a general which I really do not want. I take it you are far enough out of it to not be aware of what is going on.

Much better than a general. I used to be a nurse and told the anaesthetist that when I worked in orthopaedic theatre I would do anything to swap with someone as I hated to hear anything they did 😂 He certainly knocked me out. I knew nothing at all about my surgery. First think I knew was talking to the surgeon!

Great. Still on waiting list 6 -8 weeks to see a consultant so op will not be yet but trying to get all the information I can. Very helpful. Thank you

I have had both knees replaced and total shoulder replacement twice (first one failed so needed a revision surgery)with no problems all since being diagnosed with Afib.
