I was wondering if any of you had knee replacement and were lucky enough not to go back in Afib or SVT, I am on the list for knee replacement and I only know of one person who had it done and also had Afib and SVT and with both knees at different times ended up inICU for a week after, I am inNSR thanks to cardioversion do I am dreading the much needed knee replacement afraid it will knock me out of NSR and set off the Afib and SVT again. I know it is not an easy surgery and hope I am lucky enough not to end up with more issues
Thank you

Are you concerned about knee surgery in particular or anaesthetic and surgery in any form. I had a gall bladder removal op eighteen months or so ago and was concerned about going into af and or svt. All was well, no problems in my case. Anaesthetists are well versed in dealing with people with arrhythmias and know how to cope. You will be well taken care of. Best wishes.
Much more optimistic that I will stay In NSR, One less thing to worry about, I am so happy your was not set off. I wish you a wonderful day, Thank you
Hi,
I had a partial knee replacement on 6 Nov 2015. At that time I had been AF free for some 7 months. My AF was paroxysmal AF. I had not had nor have I had SVT nor did anything untoward occur during knee surgery. I had a GA for the knee surgery although I understand some are offered an epidural.
Personally I found the post op recovery and exercises and associated disciplines much harder than the immediate post op.
I was back driving my car at 8 weeks and back at work driving a bus at 11 weeks.
I have only had one AF event since knee surgery and that was in February 2018 which lasted for about 5 hours and arose from me sleeping on my left side.
Hope that helps. I guess it all depends on how much pain you are in from the knee.
My view is - tell your surgeon and the anaethestist and leave it to them - and go for the knee job but make sure you have the physical and mental stamina to deal with the weeks and weeks of demanding recovery.
I am aware of the recovery,I nursed my husband through one, He was in great health though so the knee was his only issue,.i was concerned about the Afib or SVT coming back because the surgery is intensive as well as recovery. I do thank you for your reply
I have had 2 hip replacements, sepsis and 2 spine operations and even though my heart was all over the place with the latter, I did not go back into AF at the time or immediately after the operations. Hope that reassures.
I had a bowel resection last year. I was fine during the op but went into afib 3 days later - my first attack for nearly a year. I think it was due to dehydration after coming off the drip and having the catheter removed. The catheter had irritated my bladder causing me to urinate loads that day and I had not replaced the fluid by drinking enough- the keyhole surgery leaves you bloated and anything other than little sips made that a lot worse.
Thank you, I am reassured by the updates and am feeling less anxious with worrying about going back in Afib or SVT . I will hope I breeze right through and will really watch the fluids. I wish you a wonderful day
Hi Myrnalynn, not to worry I had a full knee replacement 6 weeks ago. My Electrophysiologist told me to prepare my body eat healthy iron supplement and doubled my magnesium intake make sure you drink plenty of water stay hydrated. He spoke to the team of of anesthesiologists and told them I had been cardio converted and it was successful so they were aware. Surgery a success and still in steady sinus rhythm. 😉 good luck
I too had knee replacement - 7 weeks now and no problems during or since with A Fib! Two gout flares which made no sense as I was drinking copious amounts of water and none of the foods or alcohol which are supposed triggers during the first one, which came the week after surgery. The second started this week so I guess it's time to try alpurinol...
I'm seven weeks out from a knee replacement which was done with epidural anaesthesia. My heart, which had been converted from flutter three weeks earlier behaved perfectly and I slept through the whole thing.
I took my kayak out this morning and both knee and heart behaved perfectly.
I cannot believe how much better my knee feels- I'd put up with it for so long I didn't realise how much affected my daily life, until it was replaced.
How very wonderful Sounds like your healing well and glad your on the road to freedom of pain, I am so glad your heart behaved and I am so hoping mine will do the same.
