Ablation update and some good news re our NHS

Thought I would give an update on my ablation and subsequent treatment.

As already posted, on 5th July I had a long awaited ablation in effect this was a second ablation in a period of about 7 years. This time it was s cryo ablation so just isolated the pulmonary veins. After an initially good 2 weeks with very little AF I went back in to an arrhythmia ( wasn’t quite sure what!) 24/7. My 3 month review was to be 22nd September and the thought of having to be on another Waiting list for another touch up was rather daunting. I was called in for an ecg to see what was going on but in truth I felt very fed up about the whole thing.

Then, some great news! My new EP looked at the ecg and thinks that what he is seeing is predominantly tachycardia which he can ablate relatively easily and he has called me in for another procedure THIS Thursday!! It will be under sedation this time ( boohoo) as he now knows my heart physiology and it will mean not having to wait for an anaesthesiologist to be available. Guess I will just have to pull up my big girl pants and crack on.

My kardia had been showing a lot of tachycardia interspersed with AF but although there is no p wave on the AF readings the trace is very regular not all over the place like my readings used to be. A 12 lead ecg also bore this out.

Anyway, whatever the outcome I will be further down the road to knowing what ultimately needs to be done without another 6 month wait.

My EP has been coming in at 6 in the morning on his days off to clear some backlog and my Arrhythmia nurse phoned me at 7:45 this morning. I reckon that is beyond the call of duty and absolutely shouldn’t be necessary but I reckon I will have to eat some of my previous words! 😝

Just when I had lost faith in everything NHS it is wonderful to have had this news.

Best wishes All and more news after next Thursday.

Jane x

You must be pleased despite the thought of the sedation only. I'll be OK- only a problem if your body continues to twitch after you've gone off. I was conscious for about the first 40 minutes of mine and would do it again if I had to. Getting to the bottom - or perhaps heart- of things is what's the best here.

May all go smoothly!

Thanks for the reassurance. Here’s hoping for a quiet snooze while the EP does all the tricky stuff 😂

Great news! Regarding the sedation, I had very mild sedation with my second ablation which was RF, I was awake and chatting through the whole procedure which was only about an hour, I can honestly say there was hardly any discomfort at all and have had worse times at the dentist. Recovery is a lot quicker too. All the best !

It sounds like you have a Wonderful medical team. Mine moved first once I called. Yes mine is tachycardia also. They will know more after the EKG on Monday I guess. Prayers and healing thoughts to you.

Yes please keep in touch. It is so nice when we can support each other. For some reason I had no fear of anything I have had done in the past two years since afib hit. I look back and think I did have signs but just ignored them. It was during the beginning of Covid and there was so much going on. Even after it hit I did not take it serious for two days. When it hit I went unconscious twice and I was home alone. I crawled into bed and slept and waited another day to call my doctor. I didn’t even have a cardiologist at that time I have been very blessed and healthy Reach out anytime I am in the US outside of Houston Texas

I'm curious how you can have an ablation before the 90 blanking period is up. I thought some break thru episodes were normal during that healing period. I'm asking because I had an ablation July 18 and have been having a lot of afib and a couple new things going on. He put me on meds a couple weeks ago and I am having MORE episodes. I think the meds are making it worse. When I saw him last week, he mentioned another ablation now and I turned him down thinking we had to wait the 90 days. Am I wrong?

Hi and I’m sorry to hear that you are having similar problems to me. I had a cryoablation and afterwards my notes said that he thought there were other areas that he would have to ablate. He thinks the arrhythmia he can now detect is predominately a tachycardia . I am in this 24/7 at a rate of around 130. I live in Wales with very long waiting lists and he has suddenly got a cancellation slot so I think all those circumstances have made it worth doing before the blanking period. Also, apart from amiodorone, I have been through all the available meds so can’t rely on these to bring my rate down or under control.

It might be worth having a conversation with your arrhythmia nurse and ask her why he has offered another so soon. Good luck.
